if you've taken your bike anywhere by other transportation, it only takes an hour of motor induced vibration to make something as innocuous as a storage box or rack clip to chafe the surface

D-lock dropped on it (not necessarily yours) or rubbed against it.

Do your shoes have Velcro straps that project inwards? They could be picking up oily gunge as your foot comes upwards past the chain then rubbing it into exactly the same spot on the downtube each time you push down.

I just found this little circle on the downtube of my Systemsix, its nowhere near the crank or the chain but looks like something has been rubbing it through.
super confused, any suggestions what might have caused it?
Its really smooth so I don't think its a big stonechip
area also seems to be oily all the time.
