I'm assuming this was to me reporting Porte's words. Not being him, I can't say for sure but, I assume it's because he's a human and has emotions like empathy and is a good-sport.
I'm not trying to be snarky: as in I actually don't understand why he apologised. I understand empathy for someone losing but I don't understand it in this context is what I'm saying.
