• Ditch swissstop yellow. They're deathtraps.

The swiss stop carbon black prince pads can be good.
I used the campagnolo pads and they were good.

You will get a bit of screech sometimes.

  • I found some spare Zipp grey carbon pads so will give them a go tomorrow with a bit of toe-in.

  • Give the rims a good clean with alcohol.

  • At the foot of Mont St Michel, start of the Tour Grand Depart in 2016. Spent the next 40km scouting the route they will take, which goes through all my local cycle routes and hills which is awesome!

Taking a week off next year so I can be in Normandy for the 3 days they are there.

  • Looking really really good man!

  • 110mm pro vibe stem added after bike fit.

  • Looks badass

  • Managed to pick up a Superstar 32mm carbon clincher wheelset with nicer hubs and CX Rays in their clearance, 1425g including rim strips to go on this, bucking the general recommendation of going for an alloy wheelset for the winter...

  • Nice, are they the 'debadged' reynolds carbon rims that they were selling earlier in the year?

  • I believe they are, wheelset came with reynolds blue carbon brake pads. And a much appreciated bag of haribo tangfastics.

  • Ooh give us a quick review when you have time. Looking for some carbon wheels myself....

  • Any update?

  • They were really nice wheels, unfortunately they had to go back as a nipple had fallen inside the rim when building (a spare one) and won't come out so it rattles.

Made me think I was going faster than I was, but sent it back to see if they could rebuild it, but wouldn't come out so they have refunded :(

  • Non cArbon wheelset sorted: Superstar arc31 with cx Rays in black

  • Time this bike got a bit of an update!
Flo 30 wheels, and pro vibe sprint carbon stem and alloy bars planned.
Mandible cages are currently on my venge, but have some white ones which may go on this.

  • So the Caad is turning into a hill climb bike, while my eBay searches dig up a cheap super tiny carbon frame.

Stage 1: lightweight clinchers at 1310g (supposed to be 1250g but not too bad)
Need to get a replacement bitex shimano cassette body.
Stans tubeless tape instead of rim tape 6g x 2 latex tubes 75g x 2 and veloflex record 150g x 2. Should be about 1770g for wheels.
    40g skewers

    Duraace 10 speed cassette
Sram red 10 speed shifters, FD, RD and brakes
    Sisl2 with spidering 34-50 + stages

    Stage 2:
    More weenie stuff
    Stem, seatpost, saddle

    Maybe 1x

  • small bikes always look so good..

  • Planning to reweigh everything when I strip the bike, but first hurdle is that the SI crank bolt on the drive side seems to be stuck tight. Need a really long 10mm allen key to remove it...
Some of the weights below are estimated some are recently weighed.

Unless I'm missing something important, I should be able to get this under 6kg

    Frame

Caad10 48cm anodized frame, fork, bearings, headset, spacers etc 1500

    Groupset

    Sram red FD 72
    Sram red RD 153
    Sram red brakes 265
    Duraace 10 7900 speed 11-28 187
    Hollowgram SISL2 spidering 50-34 + stages 500

    Cables & Outers 100

    Finishing kit

        Ritchey evocurve carbon bars 220
    Deda Superleggero Stem 90mm -8 100
    Toupe Pro Saddle 137
    Speedplay TI 165
    Lizardskin DSP 2.5mm black 40
Chinese carbon seatpost - cut 147

    Wheels

Kinlin xr200, sapim race, bitex hubs 1310

    Estimated total: 5893

  • never mind.

  • Down to 6.22kg.

Using lightweight butyl tubes at 90g each, as the latex tubes I had were 28mm ones and weighed in at 90g.
Going to order some lighter latex tubes.

I think the groupset is coming in heavier than advertised.

Next easy tasks are changing the chain (-26g), Changing tubes (~50g), trim steerer and seatpost.

  • Stripped carbon railed SLR would knock 40g off that, no-one needs padding!

  • I know it's heavier ... but don't you want a 25mm tyre on the back? It should fit.

Trimming the seatpost will help a fair bit.

  • Previous wheels had 23 front 25 back GP4000s and it fit well, just not as light!
No doubt i’ll be back on them if the Veloflex puncture regularly.

Thinking about a toupe/romin shaped carbon eBay saddle, they appear to be around £15, worth a punt?

Also looking at a inline seatpost, should be able to get it sub 100g as I don’t need much seatpost exposed.

A lighter handlebar and brakeset are also welcome, as it looks like i’ll have to do a little bit more work than expected to get it under 6kg

  • I have veloflex. 23 front 25mm rear. They've only had about 1000km on them but they've been excellent. The ride is dreamy with latex tubes.

The reason I mention the 25 rear is I find a pretty exact pressure is needed on the rear tyre in order to get grip on wet or dusty patches of climbs (78psi for me - 60kg rider), but not be too low to pinch puncture. Traction is not really critical on most hardrider type timetrials but it definitely is on many of the hillclimbs in my area. If I had a 23 on the back to get the same grip I think I'd be into pinch-puncture territory.

FWIW the carbon SMP copies on eliexpress are excellent saddles and weigh nothing. I have several (and some real SMPs to relieve any guilt).
