I have been slightly put off riding fixed for this event now after reading all this! I haven't even considered single speed, I would either be fixed or geared.
-

If you want to be a traditionalist and have a single cog then single speed, but when I did it a couples of years ago I was thankful to have gears to play around with. It's a nice event so embrace and enjoy the occasion rain or shine! :)

Is there a Garmin file for the 2015 route anywhere?

Anyone withdrawn from this before? I'm too going-on-holiday-the-next-day to do it this year, and since entries are non-transferrable I can't even do the decent thing and give my entry to a mate. Says I can get a guaranteed place for next year as long as I pay a fee... anyone know what that fee is?
Christ the rideLondon site is shit. -
• #1411
iirc you get a guaranteed place but still have to pay the full entry fee.
-
• #1412
So they gobble up this year's entry fee too?
-
• #1413
Yep. Supply and demand, innit.
-
• #1414
Damn them.

I think my performance in this will be comic, but maybe that's a good thing- I'll be the one ambling along with HED Stinger 4's.

I was in fine form last year, and had been averaging 250+ miles a week for the 6 months before the ride...
This year work has meant my training has consisted of airport food, hotel food and inactivity.
I'm going to be blowing out my arse.

I made one from the google maps version on the website:

Oh, I can link you up to the 2013 route on Strava... assume that's the same? Last year's obviously will be lacking Leith and Box.

give the entry to a mate

Entries cant be transferred and they check photo id at registration if i remember correctly.
There is a pretty good reason for it really. Can you imagine the admin if anyone could change their entry to someone else. It would also create a kind of horrible "black market" for places.
Also, if you could just miss the event and get on the next year for free you'd probably see a load more people doing that. Particularly last year with the forecast. I had to miss the first event (in the gorgeous sunshine) due to an infected wisdom tooth removal (not nice) but meant I was guaranteed a place last year in the pouring rain!

Insurance would likely be invalidated were that friend to have or cause an accident too.
-
• #1422
But if you are willing to go and register for your mate you can then just hand them the pack with all the numbers etc. No one checks ID at the departure.
-
• #1423
^ exactly what @middleofnowhere said. just collect the entry and give it to a mate. don't think about it too much. if you defer for next year you have to pay again...

Does anyone know how the wave load / start time actually works on the day? What happens if you are early (or late) for your scheduled time: would you roll through anyway without too much fuss?
The last year version of me was way too conservative in the finishing time, and I'm set to start at 08:03 am.

If it's like last year, yes you would.
RL100 geared smashfest.
Dunwich Dynamo fixed.
