  • I've just put some new ram in my netbook but when I boot it up nothing is happening. Should it work as normal with new ram or do I have to wait a bit? Worried I've got the wrong one now.

  • If it is the correct ram and the notebook can use the total quantity it should just work i.e. boot up.
You may sometimes get a message at boot time that the quantity of ram has changed.
Are you hearing any BIOS beep codes?.
    http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm

  • No not hearing any beeps. This is what I had:
    http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=599661-001
And this is what I bought:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/158634-crucial-2gb-ddr2-800mhz-memory-ct25664ac800
I tried to match everything but I guess I got it wrong.

  • Try removing the offending article and run the crucial memory scanner.
    http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/systemscanner/?gclid=Cj0KEQjw_YKtBRC7zZjFp8bF_foBEiQAfyigc41mUplIQAbWztivpOoIMjmcHohV1kwnpvE5i2HKLJIaAmwQ8P8HAQ&cmmmc=google--uk--brand--null&ef_id=U6K1dwAAAJT3QBN-:20150711112747:s

It could be of course that the bios limits the notebook to 1gb but the scanner will tell you this.

  • Looks like I did get the wrong one (although all the relevant bits on the one I bought seem to match). Guess I now need to see if Ebuyer will refund or exchange it. Thanks for your help.

  • Hows the new machine?

  • .

  • If any of you fine folk or your friends are in the market for a decently powerful mid-range gaming/graphics desktop PC, let me know, I'm thinking of downsizing. Specs as follows:

    Motherboard: Asus M4A88T-M Socket AM3
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (3.4 GHz)
RAM: 8 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 2133
    GPU: EVGA GTX970 SC ACX2.0
    SSD: Crucial MX100 256GB
    PSU: Corsair 600W CX PSU
CPU Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2
    Case: Antec Veris Fusion Max

  • So anyone able to download the free Windows 10 upgrade? If they my laptop meets all the requirements, Window tells me my machine is not on Windows 7 SP1. Thought it was to good to be true...

  • What we talking price wise?
Also how much would need to be changed to swap CPU for an i7?

  • @chrisbmx116 You'd just need a new motherboard and CPU, the memory should be compatible. Would work rather well actually, I know someone who'd take current motherboard and CPU. I was thinking around £500 for the lot, so knock £75 off without the motherboard?

  • Does that mean the GPU would be going spare?

  • Let me have a think and run some sums... I need to make it hackintoshable... so new mobo and prob just an i5 for now... So £500 all in as is, £425 without mobo (and no CPU?).

  • And its this case? Looks like a bloody AMP!

  • Yep, I'll take the mobo/cpu/fan out as one unit and pack the GPU, memory and SSD in their own boxes. It's similar to that case, a bit taller and the knob's on the left. Great looking thing

  • Hmm... figure if I take it I might as well take it as a whole new mobo and i5 would cost 200 odd... any actual pics?

  • Yeah, I dunno if AMD will run OSX. I'll get some pics when I'm back

  • Cramming for my Network+ exam on Friday, fucking hell a lot of is is dull. Just want to get cracking on with Server 2012 MCSA now.

Anyone got a Thinkserver TS140? Got a spare set of 120gb SSDs so with 16gb of RAM it seems like it'd be a good lab setup running 5/6 VMs

  • Couple of quick pics. There's electrical tape over the display because there's a gentle backlight and it lives in my bedroom. The inside is nigh-on spotless despite not opening it up since I last upgraded it some months ago, so the dust filters do their jobs. As you can see it's nice and roomy in there

  • What does the dial do?

  • Volume, usually. I imagine you could set it up to do other guff

  • Anyone here got a spare graphics card they'd be willing to part with? Doesn't need to be particularly powerful (games aren't my thing) although bonuses if it's quiet. I'm looking for something to upgrade a really rather antique GeForce 7600GS I slammed in from the parts bin...

  • Sweet! Doing it now.

  • Seems to be working fine (even with my strictly less than legitimate, although morally entirely legitimate, copy).
