The MTB SPD is like a miniature version of the road pedal, you push forward then down to clip in.
Oh Ed, you're so refined. I just stamp on my PD-M959 and I'm magically clipped in. Maybe I'm doing it wrong and they will wear out faster, I've only had them 10 years so it's too early to comment on their durability.
I don't get it. Road pedals hang nose up so road cleats can enter them nose first.
This isn't preferable/required with SPDs, is it? You want them horizontal to clip into.
