  • That frame is pretty good value. Thinking of getting one for winter duties.

  • Its nearly done... Just awaiting spokes for new wheels (KinLin ADHN polished on NOS Ultegra 6600 with Sapim SS DB spokes and DT brass regular nipples + 28c tyres, probably Pro Slik)

    Stuck with original brakes as they are fine, added Koolstop salmons so that they work in the wet/ on a polished/machined rim.

    Cinelli stem + VO porteur bars + tektro inverse/suicide levers + fizik black tape + NOS 8s deore thumbie
    Single arabesque 42t on 600 arabesque cranks with whatever pedals were floating about. 8s sram 11-28t cassette + KMC x99 8s chain + campag long cage mech, will swap to arabesque long cage when I find one.
    VO hammered mudguards + campag aero post + selle turbo ladies town saddle + king cage stainless classic

    Despite the hefty 6s campag wheel + freewheel thats currently boat anchoring the back end down just now its surprisingly light, certainly no point going lighter and it looks amazing in the flesh. Everywhere it goes it gets attention, little too much attention in town when locked up so might have to get my GF to invest in a FAHG or 2x mini D as current mid D is maybe not quite enough

  • Discovered this morning that this frame comfortably takes 28mm tyres, and just about fits guards. Excellent feeling. Quick parts bin build later...

    Also swapped around some bits to make a super-commuter-baby carrier.

  • fyi i would raise the child seat a couple of inches because the hamax ones can bounce quite a bit onto the rear wheel and stop the wheel/break the guard

  • Yea I was pleasantly surprised with the price and quality. Seems quite light for the money too. I like the fact it can be ran SS or geared, it give me plenty option for CX races later in the year. It's can also take guards & racks which is a bonus. Plus the mad 80's type paint was a selling point for me ;-)

  • So I decided to go for a Wald 137. Every photo I've seen of them fitted, the handlebar mount is the elegant, curved hook that sits flush with the bar.

    Mines turned up looking different. Have they changed the mount? Do I have something different? Or am I having a moment and missing something?

  • I hadn't noticed how low that is, I've only just put it on this bike. Been fettling to try and get it as low as possible to improve handling but looking at this I'll put it up a bit. Cheers.

  • I bought one about 6 months ago and it looks like yours, they might of changed it possibly?

  • So I've caved into the interweb forum pressure in getting some reliable and gripper tyres for my daily commuter all city workhorse. (Marathon supreme 32mm)

    I actually took this opportunity to see the rim width as well (roughly 20mm)

  • I think the biggest difference is the visually how different the marathon are compared to the Clements, granted on is for road and the other is for cyclocross.

    But for a 32mm they do look a tad small, and when they measure up they come to just about 30mm! (Give me my damn 2mm back schwalbe!!!)

    In the mean time I will enjoy these bad boys during the summer period and maybe get a pair of 35mm for the next purchase or when winter approaches.

  • That's not quite the best way to measure it.

    Look like you got a rather narrow rims, must be 2007 all over again.

  • Fair enough, still feel a tad cheated, maybe I would get a better tool to measure the actual width, but definitely new to consider something large as the bike looks odd now! :/

    In regards to the rims, i might rebuild the wheelset once I convert the new gal to fixed and replace them with archtypes for a wider and comfortable profile.

    They'd be 32mm if you put them on rims that fit them properly.

  • Measure inside width, it's probably the same as Archetype, plus no point in going for Archetype when you have disc.

    Get a vernier caliper if you want to measure everything.

    Given that the anodising falls off Archetypes pretty quickly, using them on a disc-braked bike seems to be a better idea than using them with rim brakes :-)

    Half link is pants and the mechanic put it the wrong way round too! (just means it will wear quicker, which in my perspective isn't a bad idea to replace it ASAFP)

  • with all that talk of old school MTB frames i picked this up for a tenner. with a matching stem and bars aswell. Anyone happen to know what size seatpost this will take?

  • @HoKe - keep an eye on the surly hub axle bolts - the surrounding washer bit had a hairline crack on one of my hubs. As it was new and un-fitted yet they sent out a new one for free. Might be worth a close inspection. Also, make sure your 5mm allen key fits well as the standard bolts are not the strongest and round out way to easily. If you ever need a replacement though I have a bag of 20!

    This simple workhorse bike is becoming a little more complicated than I thought it would be! :/
