• Hi everyone,

Having spent the past couple of months working on this, I am happy to announce a bicycle film season happening at Deptford Cinema from 1st August - 5th Spetember (which incidentally just happens to be the six weeks between the Tour de France and Tour of Britain).

The ‘Bikes Without Borders’ season will feature a selection of films from around the world and will focus on the bicycle as an advocate for freedom, social progression and progression of human achievement. The venue itself is a great little volunteer-run, not-for-profit cinema offering an extnesive range of films and seasons to the local community (more info here: http://www.deptfordcinema.org/).

I’m hoping that this season will be a great opportunity for local cycling groups, students and members of the local community to gather and network. I’m still working on the official Facebook event but I’ve attached a copy of the poster below.

Whilst everything is running smoothly there’s still a couple of areas that need addressing I was hoping the LFGSS community may be able to assist on:

    • Speakers - For the first film (Bicycle - a great documentary on the evolution of the bicycle and its position in society) I was hoping to have a Q&A/panel discusssion. I already have a confirmed speaker (a dear friend of mine Lyndsay Burtonshaw - activities officer at University of Sussex and general bikey badass) but I’m ideally looking for one or two more speakers. I’m thinking someone who’s been involved in cycle campaigning who’d be happy to share some thoughts/wisdom on the challenges and perks of cycling in London, but anyone who’s available/wants to take part is of course welcome.
    • Sponsors - As mentioned above, the cinema has a limited kitty for putting on films due to their not-for-profit status. As each film costs around £100 to purchase the licence I’m hoping to find small, local businesses who’d be willing to donate around £50 for a branding slot before the screening (e.g. “Special thanks to/this film is brought to you buy… with flyers/other adverts in the cinema), as well as flyering/posters in the venue throughout the season.
    • Networking/advertising - This is a biggie. Basically I’m targetting the first two films at London’s cycling communities, and hope to get members of the general public involved more and more as the season progresses. Anyone with access to public forums such as LCC, CTC, local clubs etc would be appreciated!

Sorry for the long post but any help would be greatly appreciated. I’ve learnt loads from this forum over the years and really value LFGSS’s efforts in cycling campaigning and position in the cycling community. This is my first film season and really want to use this opportunity to promote the cinema and all the great work its doing for Deptford and the surrounding areas.

Thanks for your time and please do get in touch if you are able to help in any way!

    Jonty

  • My girlfriend and I cycled past that cinema just the other day and were wondering what sort of films showed there.

  • All sorts really. So far we've been screening alot of local filmmakers' films but we're currently programming some regular seasons such as monthly horror, independent film etc, basically we're trying to expand our repertoire. Keep an eye on the website/facebook page for any updates :)
