Freewheel widths?

Posted on
  • Are all freewheels the same width ? Im renewing a dicta 16t 3/32 as part of upgrage to 1/8 and was about 3mm out of chain alignment on old set up, just wondering if it being a 1/8 it maybe wider and give me the 3mm or else i`ll have to use some spacers.
Thanks in advanced for any answers given.

  • To adjust chain line get some 1mm cassette spacers to fine tune chain line.

  • Thanks for the reply, thought maybe different manufacturers might of had wider bases, ive got some of them in the parts bin so i`ll use them on the free wheel side but the fixed side i dont think theres any room, as the lockring is right on the edge of the tread as it is. Should be ok as its a 3/32 fixed cog but using 1/8 chain so might have enough float to get away with it?
Only one way to find out, i guess, hopefully freewheel comes tomorrow so can get it sorted.

  • Each freewheel model has a different offset between the thread base and the teeth. WI are pretty wide.

Pretty sure Sheldon had an article...

  • I have a question related to this.

I have a new fixed/fixed hub (Planet X track MKII) and freewheel (Shimano). I screwed the freewheel on hand tight, put wheel on, did chain and the turned pedals by hand. I got the normal slippage as the freewheel tighened on, then the wheel would lock up. Repeated multiple times, fiddled. Confused as hell.

Eventually removed freewheel to find a small but visible amount of metal dust. Turns out there's a lip on the outer side of the freewheel threads that's interfering with the axle part of the hub and basically locking it up when the freewheel gets tight..

Suspect I need a cassette spacer to push the freewheel outwards but I'm concerned that there now won't be enough thread. Also baffled that this problem exists.

  • Might not be much use to you but the dicta freewheel i just took off has no lip at all that could interfere with the axle.
Sturmey archer i`m replacing it with hasnt turned up yet ( thanks royal snail) so i cant compare it to that one either.

  • Cheers, that's actually helpful, yeah!

I've got no probs with the cheap dictas. They and the Shimanos get loads of bad rep online but I've only really had good experiences...

  • Just to conclude my question, ive gained the extra 3mm needed just by swapping a dicta 3/32 freewheel to a sturmey archer 1/8 , no need for spacers.
Cheers one happily aligned, quiet chain now !!
