west ferry road e14.
but all of tower hamlets council roads have gone 20 mph. (nb not tfl roads).
the whole borough feels better.

You reckon? I've noticed the paint but still get regularly close passed at well over the limit by cars on the southern stretch (heading north). Admittedly it is better as you get further north where that stretch of shops is.

Unless they're going to be heavy road campaigning about the danger of driving at 30mph in a 20mph zone like they used to do with the 30mph limit, you'll always get people who ignored the limit and drive at 30mph regularly.

Sounds like Richmond Park

Yes 20mph is a positive step esp where it's borough wide (except TfL roads), but even where there are speed cameras the limits are not enforced. Is the next stage not to lobby for proper enforcement of these limits? There could be some leniency for those going a bit over, but clamp down on the ones still going at 40mph.

A more evidence based approach to the 20mph discussion http://www.rospa.com/rospaweb/docs/advice-services/road-safety/drivers/20-mph-zone-factsheet.pdf (Admittedly I've only skimmed it).

I have not seen any vehicles in London that stick to the 20mph limit.
Is the police still not bothered about people going over 20mph?
-
• #309
Any? I'd say that ~40% of the vehicles passing my house stick to the 20mph limit.
Less so on roads like Putney Heath where it's more heavily used.

The majority of road where I live have a 20mph limit (Lambeth).
The only road that just about stick to the 20mph limit is the one with speed hump on it.

I'd concur. I too live in Lambeth and rarely see any drivers sticking to the 20 limit - especially on more main roads like Croxted, or Dulwich Wood Avenue (I think it's called. The one from The Palace to Gypsy Hill roundabout). The posters on the back of busses proclaiming "20's plenty" Are all well and good, but, to my mind, the only way to enforce the limit is to install cameras. Maybe when drivers get hit with a fine, they may consider thinking more carefully about their speed..? I say may...

Once they get caught regularly, they'll rethink about driving at 30mph again.

Wasn't there a recent announcement about installing a load of average speed cameras?
I've found it's getting a bit better in Islington where the limit has been for a while. More times where you can cycle at 20 without having the cars behind you trying to overtake.

Birmingham is having a bit of a 2omph 'drive' at the moment, which of course the majority of motorists are ignoring. I can't see how this can work without some form of enforcement

I know when I was in my dads car the other day he was sticking to 20mph and got beeped at a dozen times and a couple of people gave him the finger. He seems to have realised that doing 20mph in london isn't really any slower and he gets better on fuel.
@aggi they are using more average speed on motorways and long A roads with few turn offs but in london you just don't get any long enough bits with no traffic lights or anything to make it work well. Have noticed an increase in light jumping+speeding+yellow box all in one cameras, rather nifty that they do all 3 and if people speed up to "make amber" it will flash them for speed instead or if they don't stop it gets that driver who thinks just one more car, which imo gets any of the dangerous ways around that while a speed camera or a light jumping camera alone drivers get to know which they are being watched for and drive to that.

There obviously needs to be more enforcement, but the initial effect just of its introduction is a certain decrease in speeds even without any enforcement. (I can completely understand the frustration that people feel when they see widespread non-compliance, as it brings the law into disrepute.)

In the car coming south from Tower Bridge on Monday and saw a bike with a rear facing, seat post mounted display.
Had constantly changing numerals in bright red LEDs, which I presumed showed his current speed.
Nice idea, and particularly useful in 20mph zones.
Has anyone else seen these / know any more?

Out of interest, is there any data on average speeds before introduction of 20mph zones and then after ? Also interested to see if it effects the outliers who where breaking the previous speed limits anyway
-
• #319
Yes, it was discussed on the forum at some point, but I can't remember what it was called.

There's some, there used to be loads on the 20's Plenty site, but they have recently revamped it and while you can still access the old site, I can't find the reports section that used to be there and they don't seem to have moved the content. I'll try to dig something up later.

I think part of the intention for 20 zones is that the cars that do comply will act as rolling roadblocks to keep everyone else's speed down too.
Without trying I can think of half a dozen junctions where, without fail, a car will try to "make amber" and end up going through the pedestrian crossing on the green man. More enforcement would be nice.
A quick google suggests it could be the westway I'm thinking of where they've brought in average speed cameras.

A40 is now under "average speed" enforcement rather than point Gatsos all the way from Paddington to Uxbridge

I always drive at 20 in the 20 zones, you have to grow a thicker skin, some people get a bit aggressive. Worst bits of road for aggression are Green Lanes between Manor House and Church St, and Amhurst Lane.

from LCC & Times Transport Hustings:
Nearly all candidates backed a roll-out of 20mph as the default speed limit in London – but Goldsmith wanted this to be locally led, rather than imposed.

Fingers crosssed
Great stuff. Which road are you describing?
