Not buying the chainring wear issue though.. If you spend more time in the middle of the block by using both rings wont you just wear out the middle block quicker?

I'm guilty of just using the small ring to bail out on the hills.
Once people realised it's cheaper to replaced the inner ring than the outer, they wouldn't succumb to peer pressure;
