  • My riding bud uses 50/34 with 11-28.
    I use 52/36 with 12-29 or 11-25.

They are much the same in range. You'll get used to either.

Personally I want the tighter mid section cassette. Especially when hitting hills at speed of the flat.

  • I'm no faster on 53:39 than I am on 50:34.. Anyone who thinks they need anything bigger than a 50:12 (109" is huge) for general riding is either a hero or willy waving... Or just needs to learn to pedal.

The real benefit of proper road doubles is that you can use the small ring for more than just bailing out on hills and spread the chainring wear out a bit. You get to spend more time in the middle of the block too.

  • im guilty of just using the small ring to bail out on the hills.

Not buying the chainring wear issue though.. If you spend more time in the middle of the block by using both rings wont you just wear out the middle block quicker?

    (I ride 50,34)

  • I'm a willy waving hero with evening classes of Pedaling for Beginners booked for next month.

  • This 100%.

    Except the bit about 52/53x11t being useless. That's 60kph @ 100rpm. I use this often and I'm not fast (ftp 240ish, 60kg).
