This was my exact thinking, I had a 50/34 and found it a little too spinny but when I upgraded to 52/36 I can still climb with that small chainring, but having a nice big chainring to push on the straight was a definitely plus too.

I'd say try a compact. 52/36 is nice with a big xx-28t but the 52t only really comes into it's own at race pace.

But the 52t only really comes into it's own at race pace.
Or fast group ride in general really.
The 52t however does give me that psychological boost thought, which is handy for the H0Ke amongst us.

Not when you look down and see that chainline :-)

• #4457
I love riding 50/34 fast as.

He used to have 11-32 because the chainset he got was a bargain despite being 53/39.
-
• #4460
32!
Epic.
-
• #4461
32 is ok but think of the extra weight! It's huge!
-
• #4462
Thanks for the tips. It'd be 11-28 I think, Ultegra 6800. Gonna size down my 60cm CAAD10 to a 58 at the same time.

Does anyone know when the new tiagra 4700 going to be released?

August/September according to Madison.

Sooooon

• #4466
any idea on price? i think 30% off rrp for individual parts comes to about £230. does that sounds about right?
-
• #4467
Yes, they usually on pair or less than the old Tiagra groupset.
-
• #4468
Jesus - that Tiagra looks good for the money. Will both cables run under the bar tape?

Shimano 105 5800 group.
Ribble, Merlin and PBK have it for £300: I'm not likely to find it much cheaper elsewhere am I?
-
• #4470
Probably not, it's a very good price for a entry level 11 speed group set.
-
• #4471
PBK have it for the same price but it's TDF time so there should be a few codes flying about

If that sounds appeals to you; I am selling here: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/270635/

• #4473
yes. looks-wise pretty similar to all the other shimano groups
-
• #4474
But will it shift as well as the higher tier groupset? that's the main problem of tinkered down groupset (105 feel sloppier than Ultegra).

My riding bud uses 50/34 with 11-28.
I use 52/36 with 12-29 or 11-25.They are much the same in range. You'll get used to either.
Personally I want the tighter mid section cassette. Especially when hitting hills at speed of the flat.
Considering sizing down from 53/39 to 52/36 or 50/34. Easier on climbs and takes the strain off my ankle tendons a bit. Any tips or useful info, or just go for it? I don't race, so no real disadvantage to losing the larger chainrings right?
