Campagnolo threaded hub qustion

Posted on
  • hi All have a Campagnolo hub on a bike i am fixing up as a 70s tracker style and i want to either put a track sprocket on to make it fixed or a freewheel but am confused about threads
    hub states 35 x 24F
will a British standard 1.370" x 24 prove to be ok?
i am replacing a knackered old freewheel hub and was already set up as a SS
Frame is an old Evans from 70s so could be a nice ride once finished
i did a search and it all got quite technical ideally a simple yes or no lol

  • 35 x 24F is the old Italian thread (now largely redundant), you will find that an English threaded sprocket might just go on with a fight, but it'll be a very tight fit if it does & there is a fair chance of thread damage:

35 is the OD of the thread in mm
24F is the number of threads (filetto) per inch (yes, I know it's a crazy mix of units)

1.37 x 25.4 (mm in an inch) = 34.8 mm internal diameter on the sprocket, 35 mm outside diameter of the freewheel boss. That's an "interference" of 0.1 mm on the radius, about double what holds, say, a headset cup in place in the frame.

The threads per inch (TPI) match up, so no big problem there, except that Italian threads are ISO-form and are a subtly different shape to British Standard Cycle threads - you can usually get away with that aspect though.

Manufacturing tolerances and wear and tear on the hub thread might make the fit a bit looser but I wouldn't bet on it.

Better will be to cast around for an Italian threaded sprocket.

  • Hi Thankyou, very concise
I guess i will have to look at the cog that was on there previously as it may have been British standard, will have to check it for markings, found a Campy cog but £55 ouch

  • ok so the rusted cog i removed is a GHI WEI, not much info i can find initially so unsure if this was exact 35/24F which means i could and should according to some keep with that thread.. whatever it is, if anyone can point me at a cog it might save me a headache or two
    thanks in adv

  • Try eBay.it. It's a bit of a long shot looking for one in the UK unless you you know a few older track riders

  • Older track rider here !

    I have some 3/32 Campagnolo Italian Threaded 35 x 24F sprockets in 13T and 14T for less than £55
