I was at the Manc Velodrome when they were setting up for that full pipe shot. I figured someone was going to ride it but I never even considered it would be Danny MacAskill, I wish I had stuck around longer to watch now.

how they made the bike:
Road Bike Party 2 - The Making Of Martyn Ashton's Colnago C59 Disc - YouTube
just few notes from comments below the video:
- Martyn, Danny and Chris used just one bike. They only used one set of wheels too
- The wheels didn't suffer any damage at all, Continental tyres and tubes
- they couldn't use the Shimano levers, as Dura Ace doesn't support hydraulic disk brakes. So they went with a separate brake levers and put the Di2 secondary/Time Trail controls on the handle bars
- they all used flat pedals

He's out of hospital according to twitter

"He's the internet's newest cycling celebrity."
What? No he's not. He's one of the oldest. Have some respect!
The Two Martins got me hooked on cycling... Ashton is the Don.

As a professional audio type person, it's been really bothering me how they record the sound from the bike on those things, as there's no boom mic to be seen (and in may of the shots the camera is quite far from the rider), no lump in the riders back pocket, nothing apparently under the saddle either. And I doubt they are editing mics out in post as the production values dont quite seem high enough.
Then I noticed he has a bottle. Why would he need a bottle of water attached to his bike when he's got a whole film crew around him the whole time. Because I guess you can hide a little levalier mic, a transmitter and a battery pack in one?

I think he's ridden a bike before
-
• #42
Nah, it's clear he's on a training camp, which is where teams show riders how to ride their bikes.

I wonder how old he was when his dad took his stabilisers off? Totally awesome.

Martyn Ashton's back on a bike, pretty rad!
-
• #45
Yes that's excellent to see.
From that, as I understand it, it's unlikely he will ride a bike again.
Super happy to be wrong :)

Riding DH sat down must be fucking terrible! Better than not riding for sure, but must be super difficult not to go up and over. Looks like he was on the edge at times.

yeah but just look at the smile on his face, gave me goosebumps

He looks like a man completely shocked to have rediscovered doing what he loves... (:

There's an interview here, too, in case you haven't seen it:

Totally amazing. looks like with a little tweaking of of the setup he'll be absolutely flying. Can't even comprehend how you re-learn to balance strapped in, let alone actually start to whip tail round. As he said in the interview it would be great if it inspires others to give it a shot.
