  • Avira.

  • What's wrong with AVG? Is Avira free?

  • Avira has a free version

  • Cheers.

    Will look into those 2.

  • I've actually started using Webroot. Lightest AV I've seen (3mb download) BUT... everything is done in the cloud. I'm ok with them as I've worked closely with the company back in 2007, but I guess a lot of people would not be happy.

  • Just a note for Windows people wondering about 10, it seems a lot of people think if you have a pirated copy you'll get 10 free... nope

  • What stops them installing xp then installing 10 over it?

  • Also, life hacker isn't really Microsoft. MS has said an unlicensed copy of 8 does not make a licensed copy of 10, but they did say you can install it (beyond beta). Unless something has changed.

  • So you are still not really getting Windows 10 for free, ie: you legally need to buy a license.
They are not suddenly declaring amnesty and giving everyone licensed copies.

A lot of people still think you will get a totally legal free upgrade

  • I'm still waiting for them to "send the boys round", one of these days.

  • Could also just buy a cheap (~£40) copy of windows 7 and install over that.

  • Windows defender

  • Got my refurb Acer C720 Chromebook this morning from Argos, £125 delivered. No cosmetic damage or anything. Does exactly what I want it to, although Now TV/Sky Go and the Silverlight stuff is pretty shit. Anyone know of an easy workaround?

  • You may (and I haven't tried all of this myself on a chromebook, I've done bits on different computers) get it to work by

    Put it in developer mode
    Install Linux using Crouton
    Booting into Linux
    Install Pipelight in Linux
Install the UserAgentOverrider add-on in Firefox

However, Pipelight doesn't always work, the sound may not work properly in Linux, the Chromebook might not have enough power for the video to run smoothly, ...

  • Cheers, will have a look later...

  • I have to do that for Eurosport via Linux. Basically I have to persuade it that I'm Firefox on Windows so that it will serve Silverlight and my Moonlight plugin will accept it.

  • sure, or on reddit there's an OS swap section apparently.
hell, you can even do MSDN windows 7+ ... I went from that to a paid copy of Windows 8 no problems.

  • I should add, that I legitimately had a real MSDN account for a year, it was not a warezed MSDN copy of Win 7.

  • What stops them installing xp then installing 10 over it?

The "Yes" line that goes from "Is your computer running Vista or XP?" to the "You'll have to buy a license for Windows 10" box?

  • So it does. I'm going to take a wild guess the "free" edition will be some gimped crap editon too.

  • By all accounts the free edition will be the full, equivalent version of whatever licence you had on 7/8 (i.e. home, professional, etc).

Home OS upgrades (businesses won't be getting free upgrades) only make a tiny proportion of MS's revenue so if they want everyone to move to Windows 10 then this is the way to do it.

When Windows 8 came out they were selling full versions for £20 or so for the first few months.

  • I've got a legit windows 7 license for a laptop running Linux, but the sticker with the code has become unreadable. Meh.

  • Does anyone have one of these that I'd be able to borrow?

I need to hook up a 3.5" sata drive to get some data off.
