Might be cultural thing though.
Very much so.

Hummm... the reason I asked is because my artist said that it's a cultural thing to tip in America and in the UK, he is British but works in Hong Kong. He was just saying that his clients never tip him which is a cultural thing he has come to accept... that was after I gave him tip so he wasn't asking or anything...
With the new piece I am getting in a couple of weeks, by a totally different person, there is no way I can give 10% but if it's a cultural thing and since ill be spending potentially a grand on this piece, whats another 20 quids? But don't want to seem odd or anything...

Ive never tipped a tattooist.
Never considered it either.
Highly unlikely i ever would.I used to take a can of cherry coke in for them though.

anyone done any stick and pokes?

• #10056
Why would you tip a guy who works for himself?
-
• #10057
Maybe not the guy who did my tattoos, to be honest, I tipped him because it was close to Xmas and told him to have an extra drink on me. The 2nd time, I didn't coz he didn't charge me anything other than the initial deposit which was paid in advance anyway.
With regards to shops in London, ain't those artists either employees or they rent a space or the shop take a commission for their existance? I dont know, had a look on the Internet, it does see a more American thing...

That is my understanding as well.

that exactly.
shops take a percentage from each tattoo or price for a space - depends on the shop/theartist -

legit confused as to how you could think a tattoo won't fade, smudge, bleed, or change colour slightly over time. humans are organic and tattoos never stay exactly how they were.
@Dakin i do some but only at the behest of people because it's mad long. did a hattifattener on laner about a year ago, this was fresh so it looks really dotty, the lines have filled themselves in properly now:
and this banner i did on my thigh (hence why it's upside down):
are you looking to do some?

tipping tattoos is a way of compliment.
i dont see it as a must. any time i get tipped i feel honored, what ever amount of money it is, what counts is the gesture.

If I'm paying someone £100 an hour I'm not going to tip them.

• #10063
Yeah picking up some needles and wanna give it a go.
Any words of wisdom / how the fuck should i go about it? -

On tipping, depends innit.
When Andrea Furci charged me £320 odd quid to do a slightly larger than palm sized piece on my shoulder, I didn't tip.
When Max Kuhn charged me £450 quid to do a pretty chunky backpiece, I gave him £500. A) Because I withdrew £500, but B) he was a real nice guy and I was getting a good deal even at £500, so I didn't see the harm in giving him extra. But yeah, generally if it's a smaller piece - I won't tip. If they're good, they'll get my repeat custom instead.

Really want another tattoo. Thinking of getting a trident wielding octopus on the side of my thigh.
Kind of something like this but really black and not as detailed to fit in with my others. Anyone recommend a tattooist? My usual one likes doing more traditional style tattoos and not sure he'd want to do this.
EDIT: Just saw some of Scott Move's stuff further back, will contact

So base on the fact that my guy will be charging £170 / hour, I should not tip him then??
-
• #10068
That's up to you

• #10069
It's a personal preference. What is so difficult to understand about that?

Also check out Rafel Delalande, I think he'd kill this.

Thanks, I'll check him out!

Ask yourself this again once you get up from the chair. You'll know what to do then.

Heya! Any reccomendations on New York artists/studious (personal experience +)?
In 6 days flying there for short 6 days holiday and decided, it would be a nice souvenir.
I know it's a bit optimistic asking some famous, booked for 2 years ahead artist, but i'll try my luck.
Thank you!

Ive been offered a booking at Sang Bleu but kinda turned it down, its £50 for booking deposit and I feel kind of too ashamed to ask details of full cost. The rate in decent Birmingham places is £60 and what I had in mind wont take an hour. How much can I expect a trendy place like Sang Bleu to charge?
Depends. I'm Dutch so I don't tip, ever. And with that I mean, ever. I don't tip in restaurants, I don't tip in bars unless they really really really made an effort (haven't given a tip in about 5 years). It's not a normal thing to do here. I don't have a tattoo but I wouldn't tip a tattoo artist. If he/she says the price, I'll pay that amount of money. For me it's just a business deal. The artist makes the art and I pay the artist for it. Might be cultural thing though.
