  • Hi

Just been in the other thread and was directed here. Had an accident and 1 or maybe 2 of my front wheel spoke is untrue, took it to bike shop near the incident and they said I need a new wheel.. Been advised by a member here to get a second opinion.. I live in N1 (old street) and wondered if there are any good bike repair shops? I thought of Look mum no hands.. Is that any good? Or others? Thanks in advance.

Cyclelab. Yours is the bent RS80, right? Is the rim particularly out of true when rotated? Does it have a flat spot? It might be that you'd have to do wild things to the tension in the spokes to get it near-true again which would make for an unreliable wheel. As replacement rims are pricey it might well be beyond economic repair. But yeah get someone to look at it again if its not obvious.

Any kind of bend in an RS80 rim means it's dead. The carbon might be delaminated from the aluminium base, so it could explode and kill thousands of innocent bystanders at any moment. As stated, RS80 rims are actually more expensive than complete wheels due to the different discount structures, so a dead rim is a dead wheel.

  • Hi

Thanks, yeah I have the bent RS81s... What is a flat spot :( Actually took it to Look mum no hands (as didn't see ur reply in time) and they retuned all the spokes and showed me that the wheel was still slightly untrue.. So not completely straight.... Also not 100% round as 1 little area bumps out slightly. He didn't charge me anything and said that it should be fine to ride, but you may (psychologically) feel a difference. Is he right in saying it's okay to ride? Seemed like a nice mechanic.
