  • That is stunning, too bloody big.

  • Very nice. Do you know the year of this beauty?

  • Thanks :) It'll be a 1992 model according to the Somec catalog, which is attached here. You can also check out all their catalogs at http://www.somec.com/en/factory/vintage_catalogs/

  • I just got back from Warsaw yesterday >_<
Would have loved to have checked this one out in the steel - but wouldn't have been able to get enough cash on such short notice in any case :(

  • Too bad, wouldn't have minded showing it off to a fellow enthusiast :) Anyways, the bike is still around and shipping from Poland to the rest of the EU is cheap, so if you're still interested I'm sure we can work something out.

    Cheers!

  • Price Drop €1200

  • €1150....... Might finally put it out on the bay, it's a holy grail bike. N E 1?

  • Random but I dont suppose you have a spare set of mavic aero bars lying around? or know anyone who might have some spare

  • Hey BigH, not that I know of. I did see a set on ebay a few days back though. Might be worth a check.

  • €1100. Gettin' real cheap at the moment.....

  • Sold....

  • ...and stuck in my local PO for the past two days! Track and trace can be cruel.

  • Got the bike and already rode it! There's just a minor annoyance. I've already talked to Redd about this issue, and he is very forthcoming and non-defensive about this, but we'd both like some second opinions regarding an issue with the frame. It concerns scratches on the drive side horizontal tube, see below.
These were not visible on the dropbox pictures above (you can make them out on one of the pictures once you know they are there, but otherwise they look like reflections on the deliciously shiny paint), and not mentioned in writing. I was disappointed to find them there. If this were eBay, I would have formally complained and probably started up a conflict resolution process. However, this is not eBay. Should I just suck it up? Should Redd just suck it up and offer a small refund? What would be fair here? Get it touched up professionaly?
For completeness' sake: Everything else seems in excellent condition as advertised or as shown on the pictures, so no complaints there. I payed less than Redd's asking price by giving up the pedals originally included in the sale.
Let me stress again: Redd immediately apologized, acknowledged that he should have mentioned and pictured the damage, but that he simply forgot. That is consistent with how other damages were clearly pictured in dedicated photographs.
This is not a case of alerting others to a disingenuous seller, but more about the two of us inviting third-party opinions to come to a fair resolution :)

  • Well the scratches aren’t horrendous, but of course you will be disappointed. I think the right course of action is for the seller to give a small refund and for the buyer to then go and ride this amazing frame as much as possible. Glad you’re both so relaxed and non-confrontational about this.

  • Thanks, I am especially happy to read that the lack of conflict is clear!
I already took her for a spin and am looking forward to the next one. Clearances are incredibly tight! She rides like a dream. I will link to a project thread next week; I have special plans for this one.

  • Small refund would be in order, but otherwise just touch it up and ride it!

And no C-rec please ;) So common! Go for DA-7400, beautiful, high end and functional!

  • no C-rec please ;) So common!

    Oof, that's harsh :D

The silly thing is, I actually agree with you, and I had similar qualms about my cromovelato somec. That's why I tried 600 AX for that one. Looking into a Sachs new success group now, but I couldn't find the correct bars yet.

I want to give first-gen C-rec a go nonetheless. In retrospect, calling it "something special" may have been a bit generous!

I absolutely love dura ace from that era though, and it is on my wish list...

  • On the one hand, it's a 23 year old bike and the seller described it as "Cosmetic condition 9/10"; on the other, the seller should have drawn attention to aberration in the first instance.

In any case, respect to both of you for handling it in such a mature and pragmatic manner - and it's still a very beautiful bike!

  • I had a similar issue with Hillary Stone when I bought a frame for a friend.
Although he wasn't as apologetic as I would have liked we did agree on him sending me a rather nice Brooks as a sweetener.
A similar course of action could work here too.
    Beautiful machine regardless.

  • Hey Guys,

I'm the seller of the Somec. Everything dvorkbod mentioned is true, the chips are all but invisible in the pictures and I didn't mention them in the description or the conversation we had about the sale. Honest mistake on my part, I had a few other transactions going on around the same time, just a slip up in this case. I identify with dvorkbod's disappointment as I would feel the same way being the buyer.

What do you guys think compensation should be? I dropped the price quite a bit from 1250 euros to 955 euros and agreed to throw in the Ferrari saddle which I didn't want to do for that price (and cause it's one heck of a saddle :) )

I'm not too keen on monetary compensation as I'm pretty close to zero profit on this Somec as a seller, some interesting parts perhaps or a few rounds of beer next time the seller is in Warsaw? :) Thanks for your input on this guys!

  • Parts are always awesome.

  • Parts work both ways. The buyer gets something jazzy and the seller doesn't have to stump up cash. It's more cost effective for everyone.
