• My chainline is making a noise near the sprocket like a dishwasher full of spanners.

The sprocket teeth (surly 1/8 17t) looked to be worn, with play between the rollers and the teeth.

The chain itself is pretty new, and I have replaced the sprocket.

    And it's still ridiculously noisy.

It looks as though the chain roller catches on the tooth of the cog as it moves off - which would also explain the wear pattern on the old sprocket.

What am I doing wrong, internet?

  • It looks as though the chain roller catches on the tooth of the cog as it moves off...

I has the same with a brand new set-up.

Charlie the Bikemonger was a stumped as I was and refunded the sprocket, returning it to Surly under warranty.

Surly accepted it, noting that it was a problem they were aware of in certain circumstances, but wouldn't be drawn on what those circumstances were.

Looking at the profile of the teeth, they were wider at the top compared to other sprockets, ie not pointed.

  • what those circumstances were

Being used on a bicycle, it would seem.

I'm going to try a different sprocket instead .

I see what you mean about the shape of the teeth - they're almost squared off. On the old sprocket, the wear pattern suggests that the chain doesn't like the square teeth at all.

  • Dirt on the spindle/crank interface or bb cartridge/shell with dirty threads?

Or any of the above and associated bolts not torqued enough?

Do you have a quick link in the chain? A slightly bent link plate causes me weeks of WTFs.

  • I now have a rattle from my left 5800 shift lever :-(

The brake cable-end is located OK.

  • This isn't a squeak, rattle or intermittent noise - it's a sustained grinding from the cog.

I can see the rollers pinging off the teeth and making a small noise if I do it slowly enough.

But I take your points on board.

  • Sorry. I need to sleep. That reply was meant for the snappily named @user47620

  • Are you angering the god of fixeh (@tynan?) with 3/32" - 1/8" abuse.

  • I do have a quick link in there, but all looks fine to me.

I have a spare chainset somewhere, so may throw that on, see if it solves it, if not, then bottom bracket... Another Sunday in the shed instead if riding.

  • I also have a click that I can't seem to get rid of coming from the saddle area. Romin evo saddle with a generic alu seatpost. No amount of fiddling seems to sort it (and romin seems to be bloody hard to set up right so I'm locate to touch it). Was fine on the other bike with a different seatpost...

Time to go carbon post? If so, what's a good one with 25mm layback?

  • Take the post out and grease/paste it?

  • Tried that, think it's definitely the seat clamp - need to fettle it properly but as soon as you touch it the saddle goes out of alignment

  • I've had this on nearly every Shimano brifter I've owned. The internals Do seem quite 'wobbly' and once the grease dries out a rattle is inevitable. I've had to pack one of mine with grease again, which solves the problem short term.

  • Is it the two lever bashing together like little castanets? Thats what mine do, but not all the time, the rhythm has to suit them.

  • I'm now thinking my mystery click is coming from the cassette or freehub. Started out quiet today, about 30k in the ride started clicking again, but this time it was doing it when I wasn't pedaling as well and when I hit small bumps.

Gonna clean out my freehub tomorrow and see if that solves it. Tryout a different cassette as well.

A while ago I completely disassembled my dummy lever (tektro / cane creek) to fond out what was causing the annoying rattle. Turned out there was one of those square nuts that are set into a recess down in the bowels of it, that presumably is there functionally when the body is used for a brake, but as a dummy lever it had absolutely no reason to be there.

Originally (2010) I stopped it by spraying a ton of spraymount in there, but it eventually lost it's grip and the rattle had started up again.

  • Snapped a DA9000 chainring bolt just now, anyone know somewhere in London I could buy a single one from tomorrow?
    I am a hamfisted idiot.

  • Constant clicking that sounds to me like I imagine loose spokes would sound, but it only happens when the bike is thoroughly wet. I'm taking it in to the LBS tomorrow but, as it's making no such noise now, I don't know what good that's going to do.

Edit: photo is a link to a flickr video of the bike making that noise.

    noisey noise noise

  • Worn out spd cleats maybe ?

  • No, i don't use cleats and (as i should have said) it's not only when pedpedalingaling. I didn't make it to the LBS in the end. Gonna install some other wheels and see if it happens next time the conditions are similar.

  • Right, here's an odd one. I'm getting the occasional and very loud 'BANG' noise coming from somewhere, usually after freewheeling. It sounds very similar to a freehub body sticking/breaking, or the sound of a gear change under high load.

However it's a Reynolds one so the springs are in the hub body rather than the freehub shell. I've taken the whole thing apart, twice, regreased everything including the sealed bearings and still no joy. Springs are fine.

I've changed the crankset and chain to eliminate those, still there. I'm using a Praxis BB and thought it might be the bearings in that, but they're still butter smooth.

The chain doesn't jump when it bangs, so that definitely eliminates the freehub. So, I'm stumped. Ideas?

  • Right, this is driving me nuts and I'm hoping someone can help.

Last week I replaced my entire drive train.

    • New Omniums & GXP BB w/SRAM 48t chainring
    • New Token 17t cog
    • New Izumi chain

All fitted correctly (cranks/bb were professionally fitted), greased, tightened, lubed etc etc.
Chainline looks correct. I've tried varying chain tension, it's not binding, only very slight play when trackstanding.

The cog is incredibly noisy whenever I pedal hard. It's a continuous clicking, no louder on any part of the pedal revolution than any other.
It's silent when resisting or simply matching the revolution of the cranks (i.e. not putting any additional force on the pedals, just kinda "coast-pedalling" if that makes sense).

Does it need to "settle in"?
Is the cog just a heap of steaming overpriced shit? (I UTFS'd and found some chatter about them not being great for the money).
Should I throw more money at the problem and get an EAI cog?

It's really loud. I'm getting looks from peds as I ride by.

    Please help...

  • Put it in a workstand and turn the cranks at a slow to medium rate, while having a close look at the chain and sprocket: you will be able to see how the chain and sprocket are meshing.

It sounds similar to a problem I had with (I think) a Surly sprocket: the profile of the teeth was quite square and too long for the pitch of the chain.

If this is the case you'll notice chainsuck at the top: the chain doesn't release from the sprocket freely, only once the tension is sufficient to pull it off of the tooth.

At the bottom the chain doesn't immediately slip over the tooth, only when the tension forces it on.

The chain "pinging" on and off the sprocket is quite noticeable.

  • It does sound like the freehub body banging. I get it very occasionally (one a month maybe) it's the pawls I think - nothing to worry about. If it's coming from the BB: something to worry about.

  • Sounds like the chain is slightly.incompatible with the chainring. Can happen. It might mesh in after a few hundred kms, it might not. I've had it with KMC chains and Shimano previously and it needed a chainring change to stop the incessant rattle.
