Is there anyway to update garmin official maps on microsd? (willing to pay)

I thought you just plug it in and Garmin software (Basecamp or whatever) does it?

Cheers, i tend not to have any of the awful garmin software on my computer so didn't know it does that also.
Though 50 quid to update the maps i already have seems ridiculous so might finally try the free open map option.
