It is tough stuff. Would making a nick in it and trying to scrape get you a better start?

Yeah, the silver paint was pretty rough, and didn't match my bike. I've got some hammerite that hopefully should be up to the job, starting to think I shouldn't have bothered, just painted over it or bought a new rack when I ordered from rose bike. Going to get a £10 heat gun and try that.

Sounds like a vinyl or pvc coating applied by dipping, in which case burning / sanding / scrapping are about the only DIY options but it's going to be a long process ..
I've tried paint stripper, but it appears to be some kind of rubberised coating. Anyone got any ideas over what to use? Sanding alone is going to be a real bastard.
