It's not big or little specific, but maybe it is more regular in the small ring... But that may just be because the cranks are spinning faster.

I wouldn't say it's the cable. It's actually cut shorter then in the picture as I've renewed the cables since that was taken. Also renewed the chainrings which I wanted to do anyway, but didn't solve the noise either.

Cranky: I suppose that could be it, when my new saddle turns up I'll try it out. Both state 27.2mm.

I had one combination that, as you say, both stated 27.2 mm but the difference was significant. If that is the issue it's not clear to me how to resolve it.

I fear the only way may be a new bike... Good excuse as any for one right?

Heading out for an evening spin now, so will be paying close attention to it... It has to be something fixable.
