  • Why not run them at that pressure all the time?

  • Because speed.

  • Yes - still going lower&lower. Clinchers by the way.

  • Tiny weight penalty vs even greater puncture resistance and convenience. Overwinning.

  • Doubt it'll do the Crr any good.

  • That's about the hysteresis isn't it? Just keep them nice and talced

  • Higher pressures are faster?

You must have got the memo by now?

  • Would Gator Hardshells be ok for loaded touring, or should I go for something else? Probably 32 width. Thinking either Continental Contact II or Vittoria Randonneur Pro. Want durability and something that doesn't weigh a tonne. Are the Top Contact II worth the extra cash?

  • Would Gator Hardshells be ok for loaded touring

32mm most definitely would be fine.

  • Higher than 90psi? I think so.

Higher pressure is faster until a sharp cut-off. What pressure that happens at depends on the surface, volume and load, innit.

zipp AFAIK are the only brand to actually publish pressures tested well.

  • That is very useful. Thank you.

  • Will be racing a criterium in two hours - pouring rain made me drop the PSI on the Open Corsa CX 25's (actual 27c) to 88r/85f.

    Managed 3rd, grip for days

  • Oh...

Perhaps I was thinking of wide tyres?

Where's @edscoble when you need him to fight your corner?

  • So is the consensus that regular duranos are the best commuter tire (excepting very expensive options)?

  • I have the Vittoria Voyager Hyper in 32mm which have been very nice for both my commuting, weekend rides and loaded up touring. Pretty light as well (lighter than the Randonneurs)

  • Forgetting the tyre physics for a second, faster over a given distance might involve ability to endure crushing blows to your undercarriage or actually grip corners you need to navigate without having to wash off speed so as usual there's always more to it than lab roller tests.

  • Thanks for the info. Hadn't considered those. Are they worth double the price of the Randonneur Pro though, for about 25g weight saving on each tyre?

  • They're my go to tyre for everything. I've got a box of other tyres I've used but always go back to ol' faithful

  • Been riding on Panaracer Gravel kings, 700 x 28 on Archetypes for the last week or so, 80% road, 20% compressed dry gravel. So far, excellent. No real hindrance on the road. Well, there is a bit of extra weight and drag but they're so grippy and comfortable that I'm happy to throw the bike into corners or head off-road onto a path if I feel like it. Much better than the trial run on Paselas.
Not running silly low pressure either, I like a little feel so 80psi up front and 90 on the back.

I have used Vittoria Open pave (in 25 size) in similar situations and they are more supple and faster but they do cut up noticeably more.

Also, the Gravel Kings were £23 each, delivered for free, in one day from Winstanleys. Which was a surprise after the reviews I'd read about them.

  • Thinking of bikepacking on the road bike. 28mm recommendations?

  • pretty good value vittoria randonneur pro 35mm here https://www.lordgunbicycles.com/en/vittoria-randonneur-pro-700x35-double-shielding would buy some more as spare for the commuter, but already got three spare in the shed.

  • \open pave 27.

  • Recommendations for something reasonably puncture resistant 25/28mm to go on a geared bike ~£60 the pair? 4 Seasons?
