• Me and Aitch have booked in the 55 miler, but I'm in the same quandry as last year ... I have a Great War MkIV Army Cycle, and all the kit to go with it ... Very tempted to drag it out and recommision it after rusting at the back of the bike shed for well over 10 years. Especially as we in the Centenary. I may just take it for a pootle on the Saturday.

  • Nice one. I'll p.m you for your details closer to the time. You taking your VW?

In other Hobbs related news, thanks to new member @wrighty, I have these Lytaloy levers heading my way! Looks like they started making the Lytaloy stuff in 46 so should hopefully be period correct.

Anyone got a nice period correct stem and bars that they'd like to part with?

  • Oh, and what size/width chain does the Osgear take?!? What would one normally do? Find two old chains then join them together?

  • almost there

almost as as this provides me with an out for any obvious errors. Still to do is the watch clip, and tapered washers for the brake block toe in. The Brooks saddle will be stored for show time, and I will recover another saddle frame and dye the leather. That way I can have a sturdy saddle for regular outings.

  • Good job, looks very clean! Love the cables/ bar tape.

  • Very nice!

  • Lovely job @BigBlock.
    It's come together beautifully!

  • does look good and very sensible idea with the saddle as they do not last if used, as i have found out to my cost.

  • Finally! 4 speed SA shifter and Lytaloy headset installed today by London Velo in Deptford in a quest for a bit more period correctness at Eroica Britannia this weekend.

  • They make for a fabulous ride these old Hobbs. Fast and comfortable. Enjoy.

  • that looks just right. No higher compliment can be awarded.

  • Thanks Philip. I need some shockstops for my 1946 build as well as some of those cable holders. Have you got any left?

  • yes, to the Shockstops and the cable bands.

  • Lovely stuff guys! Need to go back finishing to build my Holdsworth!
I'm going fixed/ss with mine though, albeit I got a lovely Simplex derailleur and downtube lever.

  • Looking good! Serious Hobbs envy here now! (Oh, wait, I have a Hobbs too ... ;-) Using it for my work commute at the mo, it's such a lovely bike to ride ... )

See you at the weekend. We'll be arriving late Friday I think, still have to work/school in the morning. Hopefully the Kombi will get us there by the 10.00pm cut off! Just finished giving the Jim Guard a last polish, and I think I'll enter it in one of the competitions on Saturday, for 'Best Preserved Pre-1950'.

  • So gutted I'm gonna miss the second Eroica in a row (i.e. the first two!) :(

  • Awesome camping and great time looking through the jumbles at Eroica.
Managed to score a few bits I'd been looking for. A Sturmey Archer metal pulley for £2.00 and a Brookes 60's seat clamp for £4.00.
Also found someone selling Lytaloy HOB Pedals and brakes but he wanted nearly £500.00 combined. Let me know if you'd like his details.
Met up with Peter Lowrey (the HOB VCC marque enthusiast) and had a great chat with him about his 1938 HOB Continental Superbe. Possibly the nicest bike I've ever seen. Also met up with @Quiet_Mike and had a good drool over his lovely Jim Guard. Dude, are you able to kindly p.m me Simon's details (lead for Simplex 3 speed freehub)?

  • Niiiceee

  • Indeed!

  • Great to see you mate, hope you had a nice day, and sorry to hear your awful news. I've forwarded you Simon Turners details, hope he can sort out some missing parts for the build!

  • Many thanks Mike,
Made contact with him and have a NOS rare Cyclo pointed tooth block (pre-war - English made so English threads and a steel) / chrome Bayliss Wyley hub freehub one side and a fixed cog the other coming my way. Thanks so much for putting us in contact!

  • Right, so after Eroica Britannia, my lust for old British Lightweights has returned stronger than ever and I'm looking to build the 46 Hobbs up as quick as I can as I've finished my other projects and am saving the deposit for a custom tandem project. I was disappointed to not see that many true lightweights there. Most people this year seemed to be riding 80's Raleighs.
The Bayliss Wiley hub and NOS cyclo block (22-17-14) arrived today. Amazing condition.
I'm after some pre-war Maes bars and some Williams C1200 cranks if anyone has some.
Also just won a 49T Lytaloy Chain-ring. Not sure what I'll so with it but it looks lovely.

  • Right, so I've been spending quite a bit of time on t'bay recently.
I won a Lytaloy 49 x 1/8" chain ring. 116BCD. Quite nice it is too.
Need some Williams C1200 or Lytaloy cranks to go with it. Classic lightweights has the following to say about the Lytaloy cranks:

The Lytaloy chainset was sold from around 1947 until the early 50's, according to Mervyn Cook the Hobbs Marque Enthusiast. The chainset was only offered with a 49 x 1/8" chainring. Sadly the design, using the early alloys, was not really robust enough for the job and they were prone to breakages, hence they are very rare to find and are usually found as odd cranks rather than a pair.

    And here it is:

Also won this Reynolds Spearpoint Stem which was billed as a 40's-50's unit. I think it might be a bit later but am struggling to find any info on dating Reynolds stems. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Also won this Reynolds Spearpoint Stem which was billed as a 40's-50's unit. I think it might be a bit later but am struggling to find any info on dating Reynolds stems. Anyone have any ideas?

the spearpoint was first unveiled around October 1949
    Supporting material:
a short search shows that the stem was not in the Reynolds catalogues of 1946 and 1947 in the V-CC library. It appears in the Brown Bros Catalogue in 1952 where it is described as 'Reynolds " All-in-one " alloy handlebar stem'.This appears to be the variation as yours; with a design variation occurring sometime between October 1949 and the release of the 1952 BB catalogue.
A look through the 1949 Holdsworth Aids does not include that model. The 1950 Holdsworth Aids has a listing on p10 under Reynolds products of the 'New " All-in-one " Headclip fitting'.
It was still available in the 1952 Holdsworth Aids p9
I have a few of the Cycling 'Show' editions from this period.
The October 1949 edition at p 448 talks briefly about 'a new lightweight alloy handlebar stem with a 2-in extension'. There is an Reynolds advert in the same edition (no page number) which was 'Introducing The new Reynolds Light Alloy Handlebar Stem' with an accompanying image'

with the parts you are collecting you need to get a 1952 Blue Riband.
    Philip
    Edit
There is an article in the V-CC's The Boneshaker 189 "Handlebar stems for your restored 1930-1960 Classic Lightweight Cycle". I have emailed the author with the above advert as it may assist in refining the timeline set out in the article.

  • Philip,
Incredibly informative. Thanks very much for all the useful links!
Hope you enjoyed your time in Cambodia. If you hear of anyone down your way who has some Williams C1200 cranks for sale, please let me know!
    Cheers Pete
