I reckon people building functional bikes will have spent at least some time researching their options and finding out how other people have successfully solved the same problems. Also, people who post their own bikes here will do so either humorously or when they're happy they've done a good job.
In bike porn, overlooking the muppets who don't read the brief and do a "readers' wives" post, a lot of the posts are probably the result of spending time browsing around on sites that all serve the same niche. If that niche is "Megabucks Colnago projects" or "shitty conversions WITH COLORZ LOL", the poster will be emerging from an echochamber in which no one was applying a critical eye.

So true. I have specific requirement from a bicycle as I have an arthritic back and hips. Both my bikes were put together by me to fulfil a purpose, and were built with an eye on cost and functionality. The main criteria being comfort and practicality.

It's also nice because it's generally a positive thread, unlike the porn thread where people seem to believe that through voicing their petty over critical thoughts in the most cuntish way possible, they are in some way asserting themselves impressively on the internets. It's nice to have nice bikes and nice comments, rather than constant saddle angle/nipple colour/spoke lacing/spacer stack/mismatched bar tape/non aligned logos (although that last one is a SIN!)

White saddles aren't functional.
Nice though.

Haha, they're not too bad if you have mud guards though!

Looking forward to getting over the tonsilitis that's had me off work all week and exploring on this.
