I used to be PC, now all my machines are Macs.. but none are 1st gen ;)
I never connect anything to my MacBook Pro apart from a Thunderbolt Display.
Well, you can't even do that with a Macbook. USB-C isn't backward compatible with Thunderbolt. There isn't even an adapter (yet).
Anyway, I'm not saying you have to have ports, we all use our machines differently. I'm just saying that when you do need them (which is a situation you can't predict) it's nice to have them, and the gains brought by not having them are increasingly marginal. Especially on a mobile platform since mobility+versatility (should) go hand-in-hand.
I wanted the new macbook for using during photography, for general admin and preview/management. I could have used it on production sites too, but without USB, its completely useless to me. I use my laptop as a hub to charge other devices, to move data around, and to interface with all kinds of peripherals, networks and devices all the time. Nearly always using the USB3 in some way or other (even if its occasionally via another adapter).. Moving a 40gig file over wifi in the wild? No thanks.
Maybe in a few years when everything else has adopted usb-c (and its grown another one)..

Fair does, you just always chime in with a negative, can see your point about ports now, but then the MacBook isn't for professional use, it's for ultimate portability and light use, it would be useless for me as a main machine too due to it being under powered, but I can appreciate it for its intended purpose.

I know, I want to like it. I do like looking at it.
I just see ultimate portability as useless without versatility, since when you're traveling, versatility is what you need. I can see this working out ok in a world where everything else operates on the (superior) usb-c.. but it doesn't yet, and by the time it does, there'll be a new standard. :/
And its not even very underpowered! It's a very capable processor for the size, just under stress it gets so hot as to half its power..

If I ever gave the money I'd be tempted to get one for my wife and maybe "borrow" it and see how well it does fare under proper work.
But still, it's not for that, it's a support machine, the Mbps are the work horses with larger hdds and all the ports. I hate analogies but it's a bit like complaining the riMac isn't very portable... -

the Retina iMac is too portable.

MacBook isn't for professional use, it's for ultimate portability and light use
..and for being super slick and sexy.
And that's just what it is, isn't it?
Lots of people really want one, yet criticise / complain about missing ports etc.
It's a bit like wanting a Ferrari 488, but complaining the trunk is too small. The MacBook is not the swiss army knife that gives you a world of versatility when on the go,
it's a very nice laptop for wealthy people that want to facebook in retina on the shitter. -

You got it! The guys at the apple store says it's a posh iPad!
-
• #8234
That's exactly what it is.

It's more like wanting a Ferrari, but only if it comes with wheels and an engine and runs on something other than dinosaur tears.
Or refusing to spend the same money on a golden unicycle.

-
• #8241
Anything you want pals, if I won the lottery, but you do know that any Mac I buy would turn into bricks, so yours would just be a very nice looking paper weight.
-
• #8242
..so not damaged at all then?
-
• #8243
depends on your definition on damage? It will work very well with Facebook, this forum, you might be able to check your email some days, and most importantly, cosmetically it'd be perfect.
-
• #8244
I was implying that its a paperweight out of the box... but meh
-
• #8245
which is what I said cosmetically perfect so you are rest assured you friends would be impressed.

OT but as someone who has only just this week started using an iPhone, coming from android, I've been missing Android's Gmail app. Apple mail just doesn't hold a candle to it but I've since discovered Outlook for i OS, which is actually brilliant.
Yes, Outlook. For gmail. On an iPhone. I know...
Not the most exciting thing in the world but its amazing how much we depend on email so having something that works well or terribly is very noticeable. -
• #8249
I am sure the gmail app for iPhone works the same gmail for android...

google have a new email app called inbox for ios, might also be for android, I've got it but don't use it much, might be worth a look
Don't tempt me on a Macbook, I spent weeks talking myself out of it...
