    Back in the early 1950s there was a bit of a race on to determine a functional grading of thickness for ladies tights. Wilhelm Dernier managed to lodge his system with the patents office in North Platte, Nebraska at a time recorded as 32 minutes before that of his closest rival and thus was the default choice for tights manufacturers around the globe. However, Edward Crapper-Smite's system was a lot more versatile. At the time the Commission for Regulation on Fabric Footwear was keen to distance itself from the emerging tights industry due to a conservative attitude towards gusseted legwear. As such they adopted the Crapper-Smite Scale, and renamed it as just the Smite Scale, so they could have their own thickness assessment tool. So it is perfectly reasonable to describe a sock as being a single smite or more thicker/thinner than another sock.
