Which single speed for London commuting?

Posted on
  • Hello kind people of LFGSS,
My Charge Plug was stolen and I need a replacement for commuting in London. I am in no way an expert and have spent hours reading this forum and researching online, but there are so many options that I am now just confused. I have narrowed it down to one of the following, please can you help me choose? I am going through a Cycle To Work scheme and so need to get an OTP...I have a budget up to £500. Many thanks!

    Fixation London Islington

    or this one...
    Cinelli Gazetta Muse
    wiggle.co.uk/cinelli-womens-gazzetta-muse-2014/

    or this one...
    Quella One Graphite
    wiggle.co.uk/quella-one-graphite-2015/

    or this one...
    Classic Ladies

  • Try them out and which ever feels the most like what you want is the one.

  • Langster: Cheap, tough, comfy.
    Fixed.

  • @Khornight2 Thanks for the comment. The Temple bikes can only be tried out in Bristol and the Wiggle ones are sold online. Is there anywhere in London that I can try a Quella?

@markrjohnson I know the Langster is a good bike but I'm not a fan of its look. Any thoughts on the 4 listed above?

  • Dolan Pre-Cursa

  • @lemonjelly where are you based in London, I would recommend heading to an independent bike shop like Brixton Cycles or Condor(if in central london) for some advice.
Also what's wrong with another Plug? Awesome bikes. Plus you can save a bit of money and spend the rest of the £500 on some accessories and maybe a decent lock..

Out of the ones you've listed, I would say the Cinelli looks the most decent.

  • Personally I'd buy a Langster, good quality frame and kit, Good luck.

  • just did a quick search and wow there isn't may 'decent' OTP ss/fixed under £500.
clefty's advice above is spot on.

or this, which is out of stock but you could ask.

  • Thanks @clefty and @mands! I am based in London and have tried a few bikes out but haven't yet managed to find one that hits the sweet spot of lightweight and nippy and reliable and durable and I like the look of and meets my budget!

I agree that the Charge bikes are great. I had my trusty Plug for 5 years and so just fancied a change. It all seems a bit risky ordering online though. After trying the new Charge model out today, I'm tempted to get it in blue, which meets all my criteria. I'd prefer to get it from an independent, but they only have impractical (for me) white or boring black and silver :-(

  • That Condor one is gorgeous! I think that price is just for the frameset though.

  • Thanks, I'll take another look at the Langsters.

  • Ah I forgot about pompino's - they're also awesome - also better components.
That is a nice plug though, for the price I don't think you can beat em.

  • I think that price is just for the frameset though.

ah damn, i just looked at the price!

    GLWSearch!
