I used to be PC, now all my machines are Macs.. but none are 1st gen ;)
I never connect anything to my MacBook Pro apart from a Thunderbolt Display.
Well, you can't even do that with a Macbook. USB-C isn't backward compatible with Thunderbolt. There isn't even an adapter (yet).
Anyway, I'm not saying you have to have ports, we all use our machines differently. I'm just saying that when you do need them (which is a situation you can't predict) it's nice to have them, and the gains brought by not having them are increasingly marginal. Especially on a mobile platform since mobility+versatility (should) go hand-in-hand.
I wanted the new macbook for using during photography, for general admin and preview/management. I could have used it on production sites too, but without USB, its completely useless to me. I use my laptop as a hub to charge other devices, to move data around, and to interface with all kinds of peripherals, networks and devices all the time. Nearly always using the USB3 in some way or other (even if its occasionally via another adapter).. Moving a 40gig file over wifi in the wild? No thanks.
Maybe in a few years when everything else has adopted usb-c (and its grown another one)..
Not sure what i'd do with a laptop that has no USB ports on tour. Carry plug adapters for all my equipment? Rely on wifi? non non non
