  • Lots of good shots on here these days. That one ^ is great. He's either blissfully unaware or caring of the environment or distraught.

I'm thinking of getting a new lens and wondered if anyone had any experience / opinions? I'm getting a D750 from a mate to replace my old DX sensor Nikon that I've had about 10 years. Most of the lenses I have are actually from my nikon film camera so will be fine on the full frame body. I've been looking for a prime for portraits and 'at work' shots. From what I can see the two main candidates are the 85mm 1.4 or the 105mm 2 DC. I can get them as an expense and they are both a similar price from one of the Hong Kong based UK officed sites, which is about the same or cheaper than 2nd hand. I'm leaning toward the 85 as it's faster and slightly wider but that 105 looks beautifully made. Anyone used either?

    B.

  • Depending on how technical you want to get, the 85 won for me simply because it shot when I wanted it, where I wanted it to. The 105 lagged noticeably to the extent where I thought it was faulty, but according to Calumet and Fixation, there was nothing wrong with it.
If you've obsessed with the creamy bokeh biz, go DC, though frankly, the only DC lens I'd want to hunt down is the all magical 135mm, which knocked my eyes sideways for the 5 minutes I got to use it.
Aside from that, only portrait stuff I used which topped the 85 was all medium format.
