  • It smacks of the all-too-common attitude that cyclists should know their place and not go on the road where they interrupt all those super-important motor vehicles.

    However.

Aren’t cyclists’ (and pedestrians’) rights to use the road enshrined in the Road Traffic Act? The same bit of legislation that says car drivers can only use the road by licence? I don’t see how Boris/TFL can make cycle lane use compulsory without tackling that.

  • Except for motorways (and I believe certain other major roads)? I could see that being extended to arterial routes into cites too as a possible solution

  • Yeah this will be pretty hard to make happen because of precisely that.

The only roads that 'belong' to motor vehicles only are Motorways. Clue's in the name!

What a load of bollocks this all is. I can't see it going through, and if it did, it would be a huge waste of public money to make it happen. And policing it? HAH!

  • I think this all stems from a stupid shock jock interview :

  • So, that'll be a no then. [They won't be looking to make it mandatory.]

  • Hmmm looks like I'll have to get irate about something else.

There are lots of other places cyclists aren't allowed. The Aldwych tunnel, the North Circular around Redbridge and the Paddington flyover as examples. I'm always a little surprised the Euston underpass isn't similarly restricted.

  • The Aldwych tunnel.

Are we not allow to go under?

Nope, bicycle in red circle signs on the approach. I've been tempted to go through when it has been shut for some reason like when they were preparing for the Olympics but I've always wimped out. I was hoping they would forget the signs for the restriction when it was running the other way during the Olympics but they didn't.

    I don't see such signs.

I went on Google Streetview to double check, but nothing.

edit - found it, still used it everyday.

  • The Limehouse tunnel ?

and the wooden scaffolding plank leading up and into a skip.

  • @skydancer here you go.
