  • I've checked it's not April first but this sounds like some special bullshit.

    http://www.itv.com/news/london/2015-06-09/cyclists-who-fail-to-use-dedicated-lanes-could-be-fined/

The mayor is in talks with senior officials at Transport for London about making Cycle Superhighways 'mandatory'.

Though there's not much detail in there...

  • Ummm....hmmm.........

  • I suspect they would have very little chance of achieving this, legally speaking.

A bit like the repeal of the human rights act, a lovely delicious carot for cunts to get on board... but never in any danger of actually happening.

  • I'd imagine as it's talking about E+C they are going to push for the bypass routes to be manditory so people aren't riding into the nasty junctions in the middle?

I can see the idea looking good on paper then the bypasses being crazy full of cyclists forced onto them then the light sequences around E+C being changed to make the bypass work and traffic everywhere around going crazy then tfl just giving up and it going back to how it was before.

  • If it were a London-specific bylaw it could happen, but like many laws it would be the unfortunate few who get caught out (oops, that IS the cyclist community, right). It would be an interesting additional argument with HGV's, though.

  • It's been a little while since the last time Boris said something mad. This sort of thing was overdue.

  • "The rule is likely to apply only to fully segregated bike lanes where a physical barrier protects cyclists from other traffic."

So it looks like just the two new sections of the E/W superhighway along the Embankment.

Enough people will object and the idea will be shitcanned. Film at 11.

  • Cyclists would be absolutely crazy not to use safe cycle superhighways.

  • I'm surprised none of the cycling press has picked up on it. They're quite keen on indignation...

  • I was expecting something like this. There's been an uptick in cycling safety related media nonsense recently, which is usually a sign of government spinmonkeys working behind the scenes somewhere.

  • Well, if it happens I expect no driver will ever get confused and scream abuse at riders doing nothing wrong.

  • And CS2 up Whitechapel, And the Oval/Vauxhall sections. And E+C and Archway. And the North/South highways as well

  • Ah, I thought the 'fully segregated' bits of those had been canned in favour of a 3mm pile of white paint.

  • Ah, I thought the 'fully segregated' bits of those had been canned in favour of a 3mm pile of white paint.

    This.

  • There is a fully working bus stop bypass on CS2 now.

  • not on those sections I've mentioned. You need to reread tfl's consultation website!

    Oval to Vauxhall:

    https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/cycling/2aa4dbfc

  • I use E&C on a daily basis and I've studied the road layout plans very carefully. Not to mention the fact that they have made a complete pigs ear of the whole thing, even admitting themselves that the new design will increase travel times (because it's shit).
I am adamant that I will not be forced into what will basically turn into an extension of the pavement for starters and also be forced into the wrong lane on St Georges Rd meaning I'll have to cut over two lanes of fast moving traffic before the first left turn when I could just use the road and be safely in the correct lane from the start like I always am.

    Tfl can fucking do one.

  • "We've spent millions of pounds on poorly designed cycle infrastructure that a lot of cyclists wont use because its shit, just so we don't look like mugs we'll force them to use it" - TFL

    Probably...

  • Well this is porridge dribblingly insane! Mad Mad Mad. Clearly the SpinMonkeys have had bananas laced with crack.

  • How many of the people that make these decisions at either TfL of the DfT actually live in London or cycle (in London) on a regular basis??

I look forward to being invited to manage a hedge fund anytime soon.

    Idiots

  • I mean this bypass route(s).

I can see them putting up no cycling signs everywhere around the blue+purple bit on the left. For you it would be turning off at rodney place and going on a detour.

I still can't understand why they picked E+C as a good start/end point for more routes. None of them go into the middle that I have seen they all join into that bypass ring.

  • That would be a hefty detour.

  • I really hope that there isn't actually any substance to this, but this is basically why I don't like the idea of segregated lanes - it assumes that cyclists have no place on a road as vehicle traffic, and makes it that much easier to legislate as such
