It didn't make any difference to the freezing but if they are different issues... who knows.

I don't want to disillusion you but...my 'Edge Touring' came with the Garmin Maps pre-installed, it hasn't stopped it from being troublesome on occasions over the past 12 months of ownership. IME, if its just recording rides it works OK, its when its doing its job as navigating the way that things go awry.

I've just invested in the proper Garmin maps to see if that makes a difference. Fingers crossed.
