Turns out that M640 crankset has a 50.4mm chainline. Is it as simple as spacing the drive-side BB cup by 3mm to achieve (almost) the desired 53.5mm chainline?
Leave the BB where it is and mount the chainring in the outer position instead.
Suddenly everything makes so much sense! Thanks for pointing this out.
