DF3 crank/BB trouble

Posted on
  • Hello all, I'm having a frustrating problem with Stronglight 2000 cranks fitting to a DF3. I put the original Stronglight BB from my PX carbon into the DF3 but the crank spider now hits off the cranks... Arrrrrgh! The Chainstays are wider in the DF3 than on the PX which is the issue.

Now I assume there is no fix for the Stronglight cranks and this frame but I have a set of Miche Primatos which do not protrude so much at the spider so has anybody else had success with this combo with a decent chainline suitable for Track Sprinting?

It's super frustrating as I haven't been able to ride the frame yet and missed out using it at a race today (which was thankfully cancelled anyway). I'm just really wanting to hear from others (particularly sprinters) who have this frame and would like to know what cranks/BB they use.

    Many thanks

  • Why don't you just buy a wider BB for your stronglight? Cheaper than buying a new crankset.

Never installed one on those frame but from google image, you can see Rotor, Sugino 75 and Dura Ace. Example: http://www.pedalroom.com/bike/dolan-df3-11167

  • Thanks Santino,

I'm wanting it ready for a race on Saturday and I'm trying to make do with what I have without buying another crank for it. I could easily fit a wider BB but my main concern is that the chainline will be too wide for sprinting and I'm trying to keep it as close as I can.

I'll speak to Dolan tomorrow and maybe he will be able to offer some solution.

    Cheers

    Tony

  • I see what you mean but i would be surprised if the chainline was off by much with a wider BB. You can then still adjust by using a 1mm spacer on the cog if necessary. Or better get an adjustable BB (i think phil wood do that).

I do decent amount of track sprinting myself and never found any problem with 1mm off but i must admit i spent time to get it right.

Hope dolan will provide a good solution.

  • Cheers Santino, I appreciate the reply.

  • I put on a 113mm BB up from the 107mm. Chainline is a bit wider and a couple of mm out with my planet X hubs but it could be worse and the crank spider clears the chainstays by 4mm.

    Cheers

    Tony

  • If there's 4mm clearance with the 113mm bb then there should be 1mm clearance with a 107mm bb. Maths, innit.

    Are you mixing tapers?

Tbh though, if you're half as good a sprint rider as the df3 is a sprint frame, neither stronglight nor miche cranks are going to a) be stiff enough to do your legs justice b) last you more than a month or so.
