A better idea is the entire engine and transmission from an Audi A4 or a 90s Passat - they have an engine mounted north-south with a transaxle gearbox for front-wheel drive - exactly the same setup as the Citroen H van in fact. Then as well as a decent engine you have a decent gearbox too, and you can use the whole drivetrain to give it decent brakes too.

They don't last forever and if it's failing to hold a charge for very long it's knackered. Even charged up an old battery can be too knackered to energise the solenoid that engages the starter motor with the flywheel.

It's actually being booked in to get the original, falling to pieces constantly engine replaced with a modern Ford engine in November which will be AMAZING. I just need to keep it going until then. Fingers crossed.
