Cheap vs. More Expensive inner tubes

  • Just a quick post to ask your guys experience with inner tubes, is it worth spending more on inner tubes or are cheaper ones just as reliable? Any recommendations for a long valve presta tube?

  • I use Specialized, it's what my lbs stocks, they seem decent enough, about £4 ea.

  • always thought inner tubes are inner tubes. IF you have a bad quality tyre and it gets punctured, no amount of expensive inner tube will be saved. I buy the standard specialized tubes I get from cycle surgery for £10 for 3

  • I have been using the cheap decathlon ones for years, no issues.

    I have had shit luck with specialized tubes splitting along their seams. They are the only ones I actively avoid.

    Nice bike does have latex tubes - much better ride quality.

  • But there are more expensive butyl tubes that are lighter than cheaper heavier ones. That was what the OP was asking about.

  • I found out that the specialised are really badly packed. The are folded very tight around the valve and this makes a mark on the tube. I have had 3-4 tubes getting punctures on that spot and since then I stopped buying them. Vredestein's tubes are packed with the valve on the outside of the tube but I think the valve is a bit heavier.

  • Latex tubes in nice tyres do make a difference, but I've never noticed a difference between normal tubes. Tend to stock up on Halfords tubes, they're £3 or £4 and 3 for 2 most of the time, plus they're shrink wrapped, so better for carrying in jersey pockets.

  • decathlon tubes are cheap and I can't fault them. never saw a difference in puncture quantity or ride quality between them and conti and michelin

    The only way to make butyl tubes lighter, is to make them thinner; and if you make butyl thinner, you make it less puncture resistant.

    Never understand weight-weenies who buy super thin butyl tubes (Conti Supersonic?): just buy latex, yo!

  • The pack of 5 Vittoria for £20 from Wiggle is my go-to inner tube stock. I had a pack of cheapo Lifeline ones from Chainreaction and most failed at the valve/tube junction.

  • Old cheap ones can loose elasticity and explode few days after being inflated the first time

  • I thought Lifeline was Wiggle's pet brand?

  • All tubes are definitely not the same. The Conti tubes I've had have removable valve cores which can be unscrewed by certain types of pump. There is nothing more frustrating than getting a puncture at the side of the road then having your pump release all the air (and the valve core) once you've spent ages pumping it up to the required pressure, leaving you back at square one.

    Vittoria Ultralites are good.

  • Ok yeah I must have got then from wiggle then. Either way they were shit. Just like the specialised ones that all ripped along the seams

  • We used to only sell Conti ones on lmnh and people were always doing that. Once you're aware of it you just are sure to tighten the valve befor putting air in the first time. Other than that I've never had a problem with Conti tubes

  • The Conti tubes I've had have removable valve cores which can be unscrewed by shite pumps.

  • Buy cheap 23c butyl tubes and inflate into fat tyres for cheap super light tubes?

  • They are one of very few that will allow you to use valve extenders. It' means cheaper tubes for deep profile rimz. The bedwetters are using the spanner tool that come with it to lock down the inner bit.
