I ran 51x16 for a couple of years as that was what my bike came with and I couldn't be bothered to change it. It really is fine for the most part, providing you live somewhere very flat (I did), your bike is nice and light (it was), you're not carrying much (I wasn't), it's not too windy (this wasn't always the case) and you don't need to ride for more than about 25 mins in one go (this was what made me buy an 18t cog).
