Here is something to think about, pre EEC entrance all imported cars had import duty. Hence some cars being poverty models as they were trimmed here as well as having chrome work from English cars. All to reduce the price hence reduce the duty. Example of this was the Lancia Appia, uk cars were delivered with hession covered metal frame seats and were fitted with the bumpers from a morris 8.
The basic Lancia Fulvia was a similar price to the e type jag.

i think most cars of a vintage/classic era were poorly fabricated, not just italian; but then they didn't embrace japanese quality control (neither did UK for a while) so really lost out to manufacturers that did
