If you have a hard ass from a lot of riding #notaeuph they are pretty good. I always found too much padding hurt more than just a thin pad after an 9 hour ride. Personal preference prevails though. Worth a gamble with a discount code I guess

You might want to look at the Craft Cool shorts. I have had a couple of pairs for more than 3 years now. I have had to put a few stitches in here and there, but they are great. Nice thin pad for commutes and the odd longer ride in touring shorts. My only gripe was they can be a bit short but they now come in a longer version.

I wore through a pair of the merino shorts pretty quickly. Pity, because they were pretty comfy. Not sure if merino is up to the job, as I've worn through icebreaker tights in a few months too.

Talking of merino, @HoKe, I have had the Rapha merino arm and knee warmers for 3+ years now, and they are as good as new (bar a small nick from a recent fall). Brilliant kit.
