I have been wearing and walking only cheap £25 super sale Shimano SPDs for the last couple of years, they are fine as long as you do intend to run a marathon in them. I have had the likes of Chrome and DZR etc, I still prefer MTB shoes, I find the casual shoes are not that comfy to walk on and yet not excellent to clip on and off. But this is just my personal opinion.
Are casual shoes any good as a beginner shoe? How would a pair of Giro republics compare to say standard Shimano or dhb mtb shoes ?
