Where is the best place to park (postcode) to ride around the Devil's Punchbowl? any good links to maps etc or places to start from?

I now live in Haslemere, so I cycle up to the punchbowl... adds to the climbing, but all fun. Also the best DH sections are all on my way home. You can park here for free and follow my strava route up the hill (linked below):
https://goo.gl/maps/gXLRIBut you can park easily at the NT carpark... will cost you a few quid but is in the perfect spot https://goo.gl/maps/Y8u5e
Here is a my ride from last weekend, I was showing a mate around, so took in a few of my favourite trails:

I got out for a very quick offroad spin tonight with mine.
Worth. Every. Penny.
No more struggling up climbs that come straight after techy descents, no setting the seat an inch too low for the flats and ups and an inch too high for the descents just so I don't have to move it, perfect height all the time!

Thnaks for this, will check it out asap. are the trails pretty easy to spot?

Fairly, when I was first exploring I just ducked down every little offshoot from the main tracks until I found the best lines - alternatively have a swat up on Strava before you head out and use the segment explorer to find popular singletrack.
Here is a heat map of the last 4 months of my riding there... not sure if it is of much use, but kinda cool none the less.

Spent the weekend in the lakes mountainbiking... It shat all over swinley from a great height (Whinlatter, great height being the operative word!)... It was amazing though... The Reds were terrifying, difficult, but so rewarding.
because of time presure (hiring bikes and having to have them back) we didn't do the blue on the first day, but doing it on Sunday made me regret that. Was soo much fun.It did make me realise I need a shock pump, any recomendations?

Took advantage of the poor weather to get a relatively quite Sunday ride at Swinley. Nice enough, but first time I've been offroad in about 8 months and not really feeling the love. Tempted to sell up for a bit :/

not really feeling the love
Riding on your own, in miserable weather, in a less than inspiring location.
Hardly surprising really :-)

Time for a new bike, I reckon.
Fatbike, or something with + in the description....

This is kinda my thinking. Sell my current frameset and wheels, and when I can afford it buy a nicer SS specific frame with some wide rimmed wheels and fat tyres.

It takes me a few days of MTBing to get back into it sometimes. I think its down to getting confidence back so I can go fast enough to enjoy it. Rolling over jumps and avoiding drops etc because I'm not sure of myself isn't fun, but as soon as I nail that first double or control a fast slide round a berm or something and the adrenaline kicks in I'm hooked again :)

Do you want a set of Chris King SS hubs?
-
• #6992
In about 12 months, perhaps. Unless you're freecycling them?

buy a nicer SS specific frame with some wide rimmed wheels and fat tyres
You've had a few conversions now and are clearly far more capable of riding SS than I ever will be, so a SS specific frame makes sense. The + sized wheels look to be more than a passing fad now too.

Yeah. Last (first) 29er which cracked was SS specific, so much nicer than fucking about with tensioners.
The dream is something like @Velocio's (and now @Eamesy's) Cielo:
Most likely a Singular Swift frame, always loved those.

Liking that last one, always been a fan of Singular bikes, and the gumwall tyres just make it.
-
• #6996
Proper mountain bike forks maybe, instead of those commuter things?
-
• #6997
Swifts are really nice! The first time I wanted to buy a 29er was after seeing one in Singletrack magazine, in 2007.
I did own a frame & fork briefly, but for various reasons, it never got built before I sold it on.

Nice to know that at least one other person spent as much as I did on a seat post ;-)
In all honesty, I really rate it - have been riding some super technical trails around the Devil's Punchbowl and it gives me so much more confidence on the really steep stuff - I was riding with a rigid Thomson seatpost before and the dropper goes a lot lower than I could ever get the rigid one to go because of the kink in the Karate Monkey seat tube.
The cable routing is a bit odd but as long as it doesn't slide backwards towards the back wheel I think it is fine - I just run the clips pretty loose on the frame and it slides forward quite nicely. Probably gonna go back to SS after about 6 months of running geared, just not really having as much fun as I was SS- but will be keeping the dropper and the cable... it just works so well!
