I use FTHR much like FTP for cycling. Just use the same percentages for the same time periods.
So in theory you cant run a half at threshold unless you can run it in 60mins.
I think pace is a better guide while running, at least when its flattish. My HR is all over the Place depending on how horribly fatigued I aim (bastard tri training).
My parents bought me one of these for my recent birthday, so I popped out to test it this morning:
Goal was to stay at/under 5km/min, preferably with a negative split, which I managed to achieve.
Including time spent waiting at traffic lights, tangled in dog leads and dodging prams I passed 21.1km in 1.44.20, which is faster than my (one and only) Half Marathon, which I ran last year with Hatbeard (the one down the Thames, very flat).
The notable difference is that to run a 1.45 and change at the Half Marathon I actually did myself some damage that it took some time to recover from (hips and gastrocs), whereas I feel pretty chipper now (sat on the sofa stuffing Chinese into the big hole below my nose).
HR for today was 156bpm/av, and I recently discovered that my max is a frankly unexpected 188 (running), with threshold being around the 175 mark.
So onto my question - would you run a half at threshold, or would you aim to keep slightly below that?
Threshold pace for me was, when I last checked, around 4km/m, however I don't think I could keep that up for a half.
