48/19
EasyI'd not want to do it when lots of other people are pushing their bikes up.

Did it on a fixed two years ago with 48/19. had to get off halfway th3 beacon because people in front of me stopped so suddenly. Couldn't get my momentum back so had to walk it off. If you want to climb it, make sure you're in front.

Done it in just over 7 min on 48/17 I think. Certainly do-able but yeah, crowds won't make it fun

47/18, 6 minutes, 360 watts. Pow.

I can't remember who it was, but distinctly recall someone climbing bitchling 5 or 6 times looking for stragglers on one of the forum night rides back before the Apocalypse.
I find grinding it out fixed(47/18)
slightly easier than running out of gears and spinning like a loon.Echo the sentiments above- make sure you're up front..

via Ditchling?
even more respect. -

I have never done it on fixed but know the climb well as it's on my doorstep. I agree with the earlier posts, you don't want to end up stopped by a wall of walkers.

Thanks everyone for your advice here. The good thing about this Bike 4 Cancer ride is that rider numbers are pretty low (about 5,000) and people set off over a 3 hour window. Ditchling is closed too apparently so hopefully it will be possible. I might hire an e-bike just to wind my mate up though!

Hope it breaks down and then you have to pedal all that extra weight up Ditcling!

What's a fixie?

i'd do it on a fixed gear bike if i were him
fixies aren't for hill climbing
A friend of mine has declared that he is going to ride the Bike 4 Cancer London to Brighton bike ride on a fixie this year... which I find quite amusing seing as he has never ridden up Ditchling Beacon! I might even join him if my knee paid has improved by then.
With the right chainring / rear sprocket it should be possible however. Has anyone done it and what combination of rings would you suggest? Thanks for your input!
