DIY internal brake cabling

  • i want to put my brake cable inside of my drops, it would seem to be an easy case of drilling holes where i want the cable to enter/exit, but i dont know how i would get the cable routed through the inside of the bars.

    also, could the sharp corners be a problem?

    anyone know how to do this?

  • poke a bit of brake cable through first, then thread the outer over it and back through. bit of a fiddle. May have to file the hole oval shaped and this may cause a stress concentration point.. dunno. try it!

  • theyre just some random bars from an old road bike, nothing youd recognise.

    the bit i dont get is how to guide the cable out of the exit hole, its not like i can get inside the tube to feed it through. is there some kind of trick?

    i was planning on making the holes oval to allow a smoother route, but i am concerned they may weaken the bars. the bars are steel, narrow, and very stiff so i reckon it would be alright.

    The bars will be compromised, the hole will be a stress riser (even a tiny hole) and the chances of them failing is greatly increased.

  • I don't think it's a good idea to start drilling holes in bars, whatever shape or type they are. It would weaken them, I would think.
    Just get the type of lever that allows you to run the cable under the tape. Same look but safer...

    That they are steel is in your favour, but making the hole oval is a bad idea, this is a bigger stress riser than a perfect circle.

    DIY internal cable routing for the frame, is it a stupid idea or can it be done?

    I would simply drill relevant holes into the frame and use a vacuum cleaner at the other end to pick up the cable or something using a magnet. Would the frame be less safe to ride, would its structural integrity be all but ruins? I looked here, where i got the general feeling it can be done though wanted to try the more knowledgable folk on here. If i were to do it i wouldn't be using any braze ons so it would most likely just be a hole, probably at an angle, smoothed around the edges.

  • thats how theyre done on old raleigh twentys, just a hole in the frame. but then those frames are hulks.

    theres a super easy way to thread an internal cable, get an old spoke, bend it over to be a small hook, post the cable through the hole, pick it up at the other end hooking it through with the bent up spoke. takes a few minutes if youre really unlucky, otherwise a few seconds.

    it would be better if you took the frame to a builder, where they could form the holes and braze on a reinforcement boss

    Thought as much. Are the bosses pretty essential?
    Well at least I know it can be done to a frame whether by me or someone else. Any idea of the costs?

  • rough guess, less than a £100 but more than £50, just for the brazing

    remember that the finish will require re-doing to the top tube

  • Yeah. Would have been planning for the repaint and would also have removed the cable guides.
