that's strange, for me its quite the opposite, I usually use a much higher gear than I would for commuting and recently bought a resistance unit too.
Mine are aluminum drums though while the Tacx ones are plastic right? Maybe that makes a difference.
You can also vary the resistance by changing the tire pressure. Higher pressure will make it easier on the rollers from my experience.

Thanks BTR888. The Tacx rollers are plastic and they spin well but not like super smooth bearings. I will play around with the tyre pressure and might need to tweak the distance between the rollers. Cheers.
Picked up second hand Tacx rollers at the weekend and surprised myself by getting the knack in just a few minutes. But my 46/17 gearing felt a bit heavy - i find this perfect for the daily commute but felt like wading through treacle on the rollers.
Any recommendations on a more suitable gear to get the best out of the rollers? Or is it just a case if me having weak legs?! Thanks.
