Rollers - gear ratio?

Posted on
  • Picked up second hand Tacx rollers at the weekend and surprised myself by getting the knack in just a few minutes. But my 46/17 gearing felt a bit heavy - i find this perfect for the daily commute but felt like wading through treacle on the rollers.

Any recommendations on a more suitable gear to get the best out of the rollers? Or is it just a case if me having weak legs?! Thanks.

  • that's strange, for me its quite the opposite, I usually use a much higher gear than I would for commuting and recently bought a resistance unit too.

Mine are aluminum drums though while the Tacx ones are plastic right? Maybe that makes a difference.

You can also vary the resistance by changing the tire pressure. Higher pressure will make it easier on the rollers from my experience.

  • Thanks BTR888. The Tacx rollers are plastic and they spin well but not like super smooth bearings. I will play around with the tyre pressure and might need to tweak the distance between the rollers. Cheers.
