I've always ridden 51/17 simply because that was what I had and have never had any trouble emergenc braking anywhere. Moved to 48/17 for the last 3 months and don't regret it but on the long straight roads I just have a slower cruising speed.

Still on 42/17.
Where I live, there's alot of hills and 42/17 has a nice cruising speed of about 20-25 km/h. Enough to be faster than the standard cyclist and light enough to have fun uphill. -

I recently got a 45t, I usually ride 47x17 through winter, but 45x17 was surprisingly enjoyable, spin out like mad at 30mph, but no grind whatsoever on the lumps and bumps of Yorkshire. gone up to 45x15 on the fun bike now and currently using 53x14 for TT.

will it work? 48x19? I have quit enjoyed the ride on quit flat city with few hills with rad skids.
p.s something off topic. Because I am from Greece, and here everything is quit fucked up from laws. I don't have mess with police etc. for helmets breaks etc.

Man I already ride in a fucked up city with crazy pedestrians and cards that don't even respect red lights or even the basics. (i am not yelling at you, i say it 100% friendly)
I was talking about the legislation and the way "police" treats fixed breakless.
I remember once in York had quit troubles because I didn't have a front light. They somehow police removed me from the road and didn't hesitate to get me off the roads and continue on hands (thing that never happened) hahaha -

Incidentally I've been riding brakeless on my 20km commute with 48/19 In the last, it's fine abet a little slower.
Only danger is others cyclists making unexpected Manoverve, drivers are easily predictable.
I'd be more comfortable being able to stop a little quicker with 48/20.

Rode 52 - 17 for a while, bit slow on start up but could build and maintain a nice cruising speed, wasn't a fan of reaching top speed so quickly from stand still.
On a freewheel obvs.!

I'm riding 44/16 at the moment, fixed with a front brake. It's all good with the speed and the climbing but I'm finding it virtually impossible to come to even a vague stop in good time without using the brake which feels wrong. I'm wondering if this is because I'm too light. Also, I can't skid. I live in fear of being DAS'd.
So, I'm thinking of changing to 47/18. Will this be easier to stop/skid/spin or do I need to drop down more GI? This is going from 72.5 to 69.1. Should I try to gwt it down to 67? Maybe 48/19? I don't feel experienced enough at riding fixed yet to make a decision totally alone so any advice would be great.

48/19 is a fixie-skidder favourite.
I'm running 42/17 which is fun for pootling around town.All comes down to preference in the end. Ride what feels good.

Thank you. I might try the lower end of what I was thinking rather than higher. I think my legs being in charge rather than momentum would feel good-est.

I still run a front brake though, I would not recommend going brakeless. But there's other opinions on that matter. -

If you're going to change chainring I'd heavily suggest a 49 or 47 over a 48 for getting maximum skid patches with pretty much any rear sprocket. 49x19 is nice and spinny, easy to skid and tonnes of skid patches when you do. As @Murphys_Law said though it's all personal preference.

Running 50x19 at the moment for some reason. Suits me. 48x17 which I had a while back was a bit too tough on hills, 48x19 was a bit too spinny coming down them. 50x19 isn't much higher, but it takes the edge off.
Also, going from a Stronglight Track 2000 to Omnizen has made it feel easier even with the slight increase.

If you don't want to replace the chainring then I'd get a 19T, gives about 73 GI and 19 skid patches.
If you're wanting to replace both then you can't go too far wrong with a 49 tooth chainring and a 17/18/19 sprocket.
