BLB Dave Russell Build

  • Thought I'd post up some pictures of my last build before i get started with the new one. It's a Dave Russell 54cm, its been powder-coated by Armourtex a high temp matt black and been built up with mostly BLB parts (full parts list below).

I had to make a custom bracket in order to fit the rear brake without modifying the frame from the original. The brake cables have been wrapped in the bar tape to give it a cleaner look at the front but it has the unfortunate side effect of pushing or pulling slightly on the rear calliper if the bars are turned all the way over due to a total lack of slack in the sleeve. The BLB callipers are amazing with excellent stopping power and an exceptional build quality.

I love the look of the kinked up bull bars over having the parallel to the TT, i think it looks more purposeful and it gives the bike a great city riding position. However the racing frame is not really stiff enough and feels a little to fragile for London and i cant use how i want to (off curbs etc). So i'm building up a Brooklyn, link/pics to follow.

    Parts List:
Frame: Approx early 80's Dave Russell 54cm
    BB: Campag 116mm
    Crankset: BLB Super Pista 46t
    Pedals: Hope F20
    Freewheel: Sturmey Archer
    Brakes: BLB CNC Machined
    Saddle: Concor Supercorsa
    Stem: BLB
    Headset: Omega
    Bars: Charge Bull Bars
    Bartape: Deda
    Levers: BLB A-head 50mm
    Tyres: Vittoria Radonneur

  • classic first build.
"before i get started with the new one."
buddy, for the sake of your wallet - and future self - leave the 2nd build for a while.

  • To be fair it's not that bad. Lose the rear brake, fixed instead of ss and level the bars and saddle, add a plug in lever instead - it'd be ok.

  • It looks like the frame is too big for you. Almost no seatpost showing and a really short stem.

  • im 6'3, its not too big for me, just prefer a lower saddle

  • To be fair it's not that bad

who is that comment addressed to? thanks for your rather negative opinions also but im super chuffed with it, rides great, and its light and fast.

also fixie is rubbish, freewheel instead all day long

I'd argue that it's not very effective to have a lower saddle just for the sake of being able to put your foot down in traffic.

And that doesn't even look like a 54cm frame at all, someone been telling you porkie.

  • my commute and riding style is a great deal of stopping and pulling away and riding over rougher surfaces than i would prefer, as such i spend 80% of my time standing rather seated, hence the more aggressive angle on the bull bars to give it more lean-in-ability when accelerating.

i do mostly 5-10 min rides 5/6 times a day so it is more efficient to be able to put my foot down easily and safely.

You can do that with practised, I'd advised you to get the saddle height right to avoid inflaming your knees.

I would also highly recommend Cycle Training to make the most of your commute effectively.

  • lol, thanks for the unsolicited opinion but im just fine thank you.

i would also recommend Not Being a Know-it-all twat to make the most of not being a twat effectively.

  • Maybe not being an asshole would benefit you greatly in the long run.

  • This is a 54cm;

That Dave Russell of your is not a 54cm.

  • possibly... (i feel you could take your own advice on that one) but i didnt stick my very unwanted oar in your business first did i?

this was a post about a bike i built not an invitation for very brave when anonymous up themselves bike know-it-alls to comment on how i actually ride my bike- which of course your not precisely nothing about. so why not in every sense of the word- get on your bike and say something useful or fuck off?

  • Ben, you post on an online forum, with comment.

If you really don't want people to stick their unwanted oar in your business, then a blog would be a much better option.
