  • I'm looking for a fat 700c tyre for touring in Scotland this summer. Mostly on road but there'll be a fair bit of off road and rocky tracks (from what I can tell from google earth). I'm upgrading my old Spesh crosstrail and swapped the crap suspension fork for a Surly Ogre and have bags of space to play with. This is what the clearances look like with 35s (Cheap Kenda cx and Schwalbe road cruiser):

I'm also thinking of riding to Amsterdam and back later in the summer so something perfectly good on the road would be good, though I guess I could run the road cruiser if it'll be too much of a compromise. Also really don't want to spend much; willing to sacrifice weight and maybe a bit of puncture resistance to get that and a nice riding tyre. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

  • Just fit the biggest tyres you can. You'll have more fun and suffer fewer snakebites.

    This.

I'd suggest the Schwalbe Land Cruiser but you may not want the grip on the edges – terrain wll be rocky but not 'technical' and you won't be racing anyone. A Schwalbe Marathon of some kind?

    Also.

Don't take any advice from me.

    This.
